@gnome @9to5linux is there an official list of Debian-based distros on gnome 46?

funkybuddha,
@funkybuddha@mastodon.green avatar

@gnome @9to5linux thank you. I was looking for gnome 46, ie which distros have or will get it first. Couldn’t find anything on Wikipedia either

I love #debian , managed to set up an old dell latitude laptop with #Bookwyrm in a couple of hours with the desktop image.

Installed the non free stuff for multimedia.

Then plugged it into the TV.

Watched a thing.

So stress free compared to Amazon and Netflix.

No need for the TV to be on the internet either.

@onepict @AstaMcCarthy how do you go about a Remote Control?

I inherited an ASUS laptop from 2010. I would like to install and LibreOffice on it for the kids.
Question: which distribution should I use?

@cybersmog @yaldi you need to tell us how much RAM and if SSD or HDD

Boosted so you can watch the video with the caveat that I do not endorse Diem25 (see https://ar.al/notes/farewell-not-goodbye/) https://mas.to/@Jyoti/112025833138265871

funkybuddha,
@funkybuddha@mastodon.green avatar

@aral first time I read this. Pity really. Only my personal opinion here: 1-5 ur completely right, 6 you are completely wrong. Still, I hope they reconsider. I don’t know if it’s pure computer illiteracy on their side, or arteriosclerotic behaviour of any movement that becomes too big too fast. I like them a lot, but also myself have a few differences with Yanis. Still I see no better alternative right now. I really wish them to grow bigger in a healthy way. It’s not easy.

Palestinians are not getting killed. They are being murdered. By Israel. In a genocide. With the complicity of the US, UK, Germany and others.

Use the right words.

Blame the right people.

Stop the genocide.

@aral thank you for speaking loudly the truth. Many of us here appreciate it. Really.

    @darth @littlealex newbies asking which is the best distro

    funkybuddha,
    @funkybuddha@mastodon.green avatar

    @darth @littlealex it’s simple. You never ask this question without describing who you are, what do you do, your previous experience with Linux, and what are important things for you i.e. expectations.

    Without this, you will get what other ppl like, not what You Need.

    Time it takes for a hacker to brute force your password.

    Good to know: Tuta Mail checks your password upon signup and makes sure it's strong enough.

    Secure your emails now: https://app.tuta.com/signup

    Of course, we also support 2FA on all devices.

    Stay secure! 😍

    funkybuddha,
    @funkybuddha@mastodon.green avatar

    @Tutanota @tychotithonus @WPalant so how long would you suggest a random password should be? My understanding is 8-10 machine-generated alphanumeric characters + symbols.

    I understand many calculate password strength with entropy, but this is very hard to translate to the average human.

    funkybuddha,

    @guidobibra awesome, thanks! I prefer the original old games, so I’ll go for ScummVM as you suggest (I’ve also heard good things about Lutris)

    @guidobibra great point, I never really understood the difference! Any article you can recommend so I can finally clear my head around this? I’m used from the old times of MAME, after that I lost the progress for a decade or two.

    Rad you can do this on fire tablets, definitely taken it to the next level 👍

    popey, to ubuntu

    My desktop dual-boots Windows 11 and Ubuntu 23.10. Windows is the default to boot. There is zero display output until the OS boots because all three displays are connected to an external GPU.
    To start Ubuntu, I have to stab F10 randomly, then press enter to get the boot device menu and select.
    I know I chose the right option before the displays start because only Linux makes a farting noise when it initialises my audio interface. I don't really care to fix this.

    topher, to GNOME

    Take all the extension devs actively undoing things and patching back in other things and then constantly entirely re-doing all their work and effort with every new release - all in an effort just to make gnome an even remotely passably usable desktop environment - put them instead on a separate project of their own where they aren't actively fighting against an incredulously deluded and user-hostile entity - and we'd all be using the best desktop humans could ever conceive.

    funkybuddha,
    @funkybuddha@mastodon.green avatar

    @topher @monster @nekohayo
    Visiting these systems 6-12 months later, half the gnome extensions are now broken. Systems that haven’t updated apt and or flatpak for months. Like WTAF? I bust my ass to make these systems secure and pretty to have to find them months later like a dogs breakfast? And then we complain about Windows? Windows rocks!

    Seriously, we have a long road ahead of us before the year of the Linux desktop dawns upon us.
