If there were not some sort of behind the scenes "agreement" I would have expected the Russians to have deployed an S-400 in Syria already, although I expect there is one for the Naval base at Tartus

They need to make sure that the oil & gas off the coasts of Gaza and Lebanon are extracted by western companies, and sold in US currency. Failing that, the US $ will lose its dominance, and the US govt will have to pay the true cost of servicing their debt. i.e. US support of Israel is about survival of the USA

The main companies mentioned are Total (France) and BP(UK). What currency do you think they will sell their products in? It won't be Rubles or Yuan.
The BRICS are doing their best to do trade in local currencies and to bypass the US $. The current oil market is primarily US $ based.

@xs4me2 @JonChevreau @JRHorsting well, the eastern part of Canada, from Lake Superior on down, we have a water border with the US. The scary part is that the US built Fort Drum near Watertown NY, right smack in between two of the bridges that cross the St. Lawrence river, and those bridges are strong enough to hold a military convoy. If we "misbehave" that is where the US military is coming from. That is, if we don't toe the line (or is is it tow the line...never sure)

Just to understand the BS of Biden about a port in Gaza, remember that there are these land entries into Gaza available RIGHT now.

It's truly sickening to read and listen to all the nonsense about Biden using American Navy to set up a port of "entry" into Gaza while ignorijg the fact that there are 7 points of entry to the besieged Gaza, with over 130 trailer trucks waiting to be approved by IDF in Rafah and 100s of Jewish extremists blocking the passage of trucks via Karam Abu Salem border crossing.

The goal is not to help palestinians, it is to set-up military access and a way to deport Palestinians from Gaza in the name of humanitarian intervention.

At worst, the US is going to help Israel "empty" Gaza, by taking them all by ship someplace else, i.e. Nakba part II. Certainly, the various real estate ads in Israeli and pro-Israeli publications with advanced sales of "beachfront" property gives one the impression this is the real goal.

@shoq the answer depends on whether you believe that Israel was actually caught off guard by this attack, or, they knew it was coming but allowed it to occur, or, they knew it was coming and deliberately facilitated Hamas' access. Depending on which of these you believe, it becomes a range from "Hamas is an evil terrorist organization that must be wiped off the face of the earth" to "Hamas took the bait"

@shoq "a vicious attack still came" from an organization that Netanyahu went out of his way to fund. The CBC even had an article about it, so this is documented. But the bigger problem with your original question is that it forces us to take Oct 7 into isolation and ignore the decades of abuse, theft, and destruction the Palestinians have suffered.

That's what Harris did with the 99 yr lease on Hwy 407, and what Ford is doing on the Thema spa. Elsewhere, he puts the government into contracts that are UNBREAKABLE so that the effects will last 3-4 generations. That is the REAL harm of Conservative governments.
