Current BSG rewatch arrived at the point we were waiting for last night – season 3, episodes 19-20, “Crossroads” parts 1 and 2.

So so good.

This program is simple but it made me so happy to write it! Let's write a demo program that makes a Cylon "eye" sweep back and forth on the screen.

@freedosproject a classic demo program. when I worked for a server company, one of the first things our engineers did when we got our new blade-server product up and running was program it to cylon-eye the hard drive lights

Battlestar Galactica sequel thoughts:

Galactica 1980 was trash from start to finish and should never have been made.

But Caprica deserved better than 1 season.

I watched the two episode miniseries from 2003 today, and I have some mixed feelings (though mostly positive). For some reference, I grew up watching every show from TOS through ENT (except the animated series. Never found enough interest to try it). The shows also hold a special place in my heart (I absolutely love every sound the gates make).

Regarding Battlestar Galactica, I like the way they handle information on the bridge and the ship. It's interesting to see something that massive designed for cyber warfare. Wireless technology is almost completely rejected. Systems that must communicate over a distance are either wired (the intercoms) or air-gapped (ship-to-ship radios). There's binders, printouts, and dry-erase boards everywhere.

I do think their radio systems could use some more explanation… Maybe I missed them addressing this, but I would be concerned about the Cylons impersonating other ships. Even if the ship systems can't be compromised by the radio, the humans could still be manipulated. At one point they "verify" a message, but I'd really like to know what that entails…

The space cinematography reminded me a lot of . Shaky, long distance shots that quickly zoom in on something. Not sure if that was just the style at the time, but I find it kinda nostalgic.

On a similar note… Is 2000s sci-fi just oddly horny? I don't think I've seen enough shows to actually make that judgement. It just sticks out at me that the similarities between BSG and SGU include sexual scenes that I feel don't quite fit or aren't actually needed. There's already plenty of sources for drama and conflict in those shows; do you really need to graphically add in sexual relationships as another?

Anyways… I did enjoy the miniseries! Probably going to watch the show as well.

Wraithe,
@Wraithe@mastodon.social avatar

@forgetful_bri Figured I’d pipe up with a detail on the space cinematography – BSG were actually the folks who pretty much established that style. It was a little controversial at time, with some people really hating it, I rather liked it.

On the sex, I think in some ways they were trying to differentiate from BSG TOS which was seen as a bit more “kiddy”

Glad you enjoyed it! There are some great episodes in there!

Doing my annual rewatch. Currently the pilot. I love the way it uses all these submarine/war movie tropes - sealing off the compartments, the protagonist in the brig, and the inevitable showdown fistfight.

tinker,

@helgztech - I watched two or three seasons and absolutely loved it. Life interrupted me in the middle of it and I never picked it back up again. So I don't know how it ends.

I should watch it again.

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@tinker There was a lot of fan debate around the final series and ending, and certainly - like many series - the latter part isn't as strong as the first - but I love these characters and there's some brilliant storytelling throughout. I was absolutely obsessed for a while there. You should definitely watch again and persist to the end.

Originally, fans didn't like the idea of the rebooted Battlestar Galatica.

@AskPippa Fan culture is so horrible nowadays—the gate-keeping, entitlement, and social media brigading have made fandom toxic (see Star Wars and Doctor Who for fandoms I duck and cover from, even when I like the actual shows)

AskPippa,
@AskPippa@c.im avatar

@sketchndoodle Well, the original reaction was from just a 5-minute clip. When you love an old show you want the new one to be the same. I have a friend who hated the rebooted Lost in Space -- because it wasn't the same, 'they messed things up'. (I thought it wasn't too bad, a bit silly in parts, but fun to watch). The way I look at it is that something that is rebooted is something new altogether and the old version was just a source of inspiration.
But yeah, social media amplifies all sorts of bad things.
Sigh. It's time for cookies.

Gestern (19.10.2023) hat das Bundessozialgericht ein unerwartet weitreichendes Urteil auf den Weg gebracht.

AZ B 1 KR 16/22 R

Hier einige Einordnungen, soweit derzeit (mir) möglich.

1/

https://chaos.social/@tinrechtshilfe/111267216119964424

einfachfreddy,

@TheSpaceshipper I had the Revell model back in 1978, 1979. It didn't have the pilot, just black stickers for windows.

This is neat because it shows the pilot in the model is just a generic figure, without the unique helmet.

Bill Adama and Chrisjen Avarasala.

There is so much shit that would never have gone down has Chrisjen been fleeing the Cylons with Adama.

Conversely, Adama would have gotten rid of ALL the protomolecule in the first episode before Chrisjen even heard a rumor about it.

Am I wrong?

I'm sorting out some of my old film stuff from childhood... Here's an original, U-rated UK cinema quad poster for Mission Galactica: The Cylon Attack (1979). A strange time in cinema history when episodes of American TV shows (in this case, 3 episodes) were re-edited into feature-length films and released in UK cinemas, often during the school holidays.

MetalSamurai,
@MetalSamurai@mas.to avatar

@Richard_Littler That’s around the same time that I saw the Nicholas Hammond Spider-Man re-edited as movies at the cinema.
