Well, I've dived into a new hobby again. !

I got myself a Bambu Lab A1 mini, and I am having so much freaking fun.

joncruz,
@joncruz@mstdn.social avatar

@tylermumford oh, yes. Most definitely. One of the good aspects is that all three I mentioned have versions for Linux, Mac, and Windows. So no platform lock-in.

Lemme try to track down some links, as I've given "I've stumbled into this cool tool" jumpstart intro talks on two of them.

tylermumford,
@tylermumford@mas.to avatar

@joncruz Thank you for the recommendations and links! I'll check them out eventually. 🙂

What program does everyone use to create models for #3Dprinting ?

I've used Fusion360 before, but the current free '10 model' limit is just weird to me and I prefer to save my files locally by default.

pierstoval,
@pierstoval@mastodon.social avatar

@thomastospace I only do super small and simple pieces, and for that, OpenSCAD is fine (and open source)

tylermumford,
@tylermumford@mas.to avatar

@thomastospace I'm really new to this, but I'm using both Onshape and TinkerCAD. Onshape is nice for precision and how my brain thinks by default. TinkerCAD is fun for experimentation and playing. Some serious design, too.

I think I have a thermal issue on my Octoprint Raspberry Pi.

37deg in the enclosure
65deg the raspberry pi SoC

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@fmartingr

You're not supposed to mount the RPI directly on the heated build plate. 😆

But in all seriousness, 65ⁿ C isn't half bad for a CPU/SOC.

@bram@gamedev.lgbt avatar

in you need to keep your 3d filament (the ink basically) super dry, because it absorbs water, which makes it brittle and generally fucks with it

a lot of people come up with very expensive or complicated solutions. i just bought a 10EUR back of 1kg re-usable gel silica used to dehydrate car interiors, but it in an airtight-ish ikea box and my humidity reader is struggling to read the humidity because it's too low ✨

solved

teotwaki,
@teotwaki@mastodon.online avatar

@bram @stooovie I’ve stored PLA and TPU like that for 5 years and it preserved perfectly. The TPU I finished printing this week.

This being said, I did invest in a PolyDryer and a few boxes as I’m moving to more difficult-to-handle filaments. Nylon is one that sounds quite bad, but very exciting.

stooovie,
@stooovie@mas.to avatar

@teotwaki @bram nylon is a world of pain 😅

Was doing a little yesterday making a new attachment for my shop vac. Ran pretty close to the limit on the spool.

A spool of black filament on a 3D printer that has nearly run out.

SebastianM6L,
@SebastianM6L@mastodon.social avatar

@chrishuck uuuh that's close. My closest was a few (5-6) windings left.

chrishuck,
@chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@SebastianM6L I had a spare spool ready to go in case it did run out, but it had 5 wraps to go with 20 minutes left. I had to babysit it while trying to get ready to leave, but I couldn’t leave because I knew it would run out if I did.

It's a model for a wall socket cover to hide some electronics, but it could easily be a gross cubic architecture for a business building.

po3mah,
@po3mah@mastodon.social avatar

... the cover: materialized and in its natural habitat.
The wall socket box was too shallow to hold a breaker, 24V transformer and #Esp32 board with a relay.
Not very aesthetic, but it covers all the door unlocking junk.

AMAZING FACTS

Your homebrew filament dryer can also be used to dehydrate food if you didn’t homebrew it too much!

( xD )

(I want to make a particular kind of spinach feta bread but I have to dry a bunch of spinach first ^_^ )

jigmedatse,
@jigmedatse@social.jigmedatse.com avatar

@moira I've never used my filament drier for drying filament... I'm just such a loser I guess... Using it for drying food and all.

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@jigmedatse It's a good secondary use!

They should make devices for drying food, I'm sure there'd be a market.

Manyfold v0.66.0 has been released! This release focuses on accessibility again, particularly around keyboard control of the 3d models. But, in order to make that happen, we had to do a big rewrite of the renderer that should make it much faster and smoother! We hope you like it 😄

Feeling relatively clear today so thought I'd get a few of the wife's requested prints designed but for some reason #FreeCAD just wouldn't start so went looking for alternatives and stumbled upon #dune3d and OMG what a banging new #CAD tool, it's a very fast core clearly built around keyboard shortcuts but has a lovely context menu you bring up with space and for designing simple parts has absolutely everything I need today. I am very impressed. #3dprinting #design #partdesign

Triffen,
@Triffen@floss.social avatar

@sp4rkr4t Thank you for mentioning it! I've tried it today too, got many things without watching any tutorials, read all the short and comprehensive documentation, and feel ready to start my own projects now. I like all the complicated stuff FreeCAD can do, but here simple stuff is really simple.

update: Release Candidate 1? I took some time today to test-print a couple of colours that arrived this week, and they seem pretty close. This is the first time I've compared a full batch against colours on a real screen - what do you think?

All 16 colours are different brands and types of PLA, so given access to the complete palette, basically every printer should be capable of making some form or other of CGA pixel art.
