Is there a #japanese#cooking bubble here? Reading about washing #sushi rice, there seems to be an even split between soaking the rice in cold water after washing (up to „overnight), and letting is soak in a strainer (between 10 and 30 minutes).
@below We usually let ours soak in the rice cooker directly before starting the cook, usually an hour to 30min beforehand. The rice cooker even has an “umami” option that does this as a part of its timer - locks the lid for 40 min, then starts.
Googling Japanese dictionaries a bunch because I know I'm hearing the sounds correctly, but can't figure out the words. Apparently, one character speaks almost exclusively in slang with terms like https://kotobank.jp/word/あたぼう-425260 which is short form slang for あたりまえだ、べらぼうめ.
Whew, there are always challenges in learning a new language, but c'mon! Just learned that in #Japanese the word for 'painting' is the very short, and almost un-hearable micro-syllable 'e.' It totally disappears when used in a sentence.
I'll have to be sure to avoid art galleries when visiting Japan 'cuz I'll never know what people are talking about.
@ottaross We found out after we'd paid, so … And I really wish I could turn off all the silly gamification stuff. It's just annoying as I don't care about competing with anyone.
@WTL indeed, same. They hype the points and streaks, but I've been ignoring them. Don't mind the nag emails so much, as they keep it at the top of mind.
My wife used the word トリセツ to talk about our toddler. It's an abbreviation of 取扱説明書(とりあつかいせつめいしょ) or "user's manual." But can also be applied to how to handle people, such as celebs (and small children). #japanese
Hmm. This week's #JMusicFriday theme is #obscure . That one is a bit trickier because I don't really know what people know well since I already don't listen to the most popular stuff and find things more indirectly and backwards than most people do (particularly since I listen more to #utaite than anything else.) Mary did this cover 7 years ago of a song that doesn't seem well known as far as I can tell though and it's really pleasant to listen to, so I'll s hare it:
Anyone else getting hit with a lot of #spam today - much of it in #Japanese? Or is it just me? Sad to see that #Mastodon has reached this point in its evolution as a mainstream platform now...
Most of my exposure to JMusic has been through mass-consumption brands and fan derivatives, so today's #JMusicFriday prompt "obscure" is a fun challenge. (Thanks, @NaraMoore !)
Bitei Matsuki has been releasing music for a few years now and has a small but growing following. I got hooked recently when "Persona" popped up on my YT recommends. The song flows like water - at once soothing and lively, punctuated by bursts of turbulent emotion.
In honor of Nemophila's #LivePerformance in less than 24 hours at Budokan, here's a song from their first concert as Nemophila in front of a live audience.
This was coming out of COVID restrictions, so the audience was only allowed to clap, no shouting. It was still quite an emotional night.
