Is there a bubble here? Reading about washing rice, there seems to be an even split between soaking the rice in cold water after washing (up to „overnight), and letting is soak in a strainer (between 10 and 30 minutes).

Any insights on that? Please boost for reach

dimitribouniol,
@dimitribouniol@mastodon.social avatar

@below We usually let ours soak in the rice cooker directly before starting the cook, usually an hour to 30min beforehand. The rice cooker even has an “umami” option that does this as a part of its timer - locks the lid for 40 min, then starts.

Googling Japanese dictionaries a bunch because I know I'm hearing the sounds correctly, but can't figure out the words. Apparently, one character speaks almost exclusively in slang with terms like https://kotobank.jp/word/あたぼう-425260 which is short form slang for あたりまえだ、べらぼうめ.

@literalgrill This is kinda harder than I thought. :blobfoxterrified:

Whew, there are always challenges in learning a new language, but c'mon! Just learned that in the word for 'painting' is the very short, and almost un-hearable micro-syllable 'e.' It totally disappears when used in a sentence.

I'll have to be sure to avoid art galleries when visiting Japan 'cuz I'll never know what people are talking about.

Where do I file a bug report?

WTL,
@WTL@mastodon.social avatar

@ottaross We found out after we'd paid, so … And I really wish I could turn off all the silly gamification stuff. It's just annoying as I don't care about competing with anyone.

ottaross,
@ottaross@mastodon.social avatar

@WTL indeed, same. They hype the points and streaks, but I've been ignoring them. Don't mind the nag emails so much, as they keep it at the top of mind.

Random word of the day:
インバウン丼(いんばうんどん)is a high-priced rice-bowl dish (don) aimed at "inbound" overseas tourists.

My wife used the word トリセツ to talk about our toddler. It's an abbreviation of 取扱説明書(とりあつかいせつめいしょ) or "user's manual." But can also be applied to how to handle people, such as celebs (and small children).

globalc,
@globalc@chaos.social avatar

@richardmedh I still can not make a connection from the term to the toddler, what's the missing piece?

Hmm. This week's theme is . That one is a bit trickier because I don't really know what people know well since I already don't listen to the most popular stuff and find things more indirectly and backwards than most people do (particularly since I listen more to than anything else.) Mary did this cover 7 years ago of a song that doesn't seem well known as far as I can tell though and it's really pleasant to listen to, so I'll s hare it:

Most of my exposure to JMusic has been through mass-consumption brands and fan derivatives, so today's prompt "obscure" is a fun challenge. (Thanks, @NaraMoore !)

Bitei Matsuki has been releasing music for a few years now and has a small but growing following. I got hooked recently when "Persona" popped up on my YT recommends. The song flows like water - at once soothing and lively, punctuated by bursts of turbulent emotion.

Aujourd’hui j’ai appris que ça fait quinze ans que je me trompe de nom en français quand je parle d’un arbre hyper courant au Japon :

梅 (ume) abricotier du Japon (anglais : Japanese plum, Chinese plum, Japanese apricot)

C’est compliqué parce que :

李 (sumomo) prunier du Japon (ang. : Japanese plum, Chinese plum)

杏 (anzu) abricotier (ang. : apricot)

西洋李 (seiyō sumomo) prunier (ang. : plum)

In honor of Nemophila's in less than 24 hours at Budokan, here's a song from their first concert as Nemophila in front of a live audience.

This was coming out of COVID restrictions, so the audience was only allowed to clap, no shouting. It was still quite an emotional night.
