Some system updates. #EndeavourOS

I somtimes have small, but annoying issues on my machine,
running EndeavourOS. Now, I don't use my PC often, only on the weekends.
And I'm thinking if I should just switch for another distro,
Or really take some time to look in the logs and try to google and fix this issue.
I alreayd tried once but it didn't hold for long.
It's a DNS issue.
What do you think?

kohelet,
@kohelet@mstdn.social avatar

@paul
yeah I know it isn't very informative, and that's because I haven't taken the time to look into it.
instead I just reboot, but it's not ideal. also I tried not to get over the 500 character limit 😅

all I know is that when internet stops working, ping says it can't resolve names.

I said it's a DNS issue to see if it's something common, having network issues on this disto.

of course if I'm gonna try fixing it I'll be more detailed.

kohelet,
@kohelet@mstdn.social avatar

@paul
it used to be something with the
/etc/resolv.conf that was being reset.
when I modified it the internet worked again, but it was reset on boot, so I made it immutable.
I think with chattr +i
it worked for a while, but I guess this was a workaround that help it only temporarily.

Thank you for being a distro that makes Arch Linux more accessible to users!

@fedora wow, we're speechless.... Thank you for the love but also for the amazing ground work you have done to make our project possible. :underheart:

Suddenly, a wild @EndeavourOS appears!

While it's nothing special to run it on TUXEDO hardware, this is particularly exciting as it is an early version coming out of our fully automated installation service. Things look promising to have it available for all customers pretty soon! 🤗

#EndeavourOS #Archlinux #TUXEDO

vinzv,
@vinzv@noto.social avatar

@EndeavourOS Tbh it's been in our backlog for quite a while. And there still are some issues to tackle, like an OEM mode for users running a simple setup of their system at first boot.
But we'll get there! ✊

EndeavourOS,
@EndeavourOS@mastodon.social avatar

@vinzv Good luck!

@vantablack i might check that out. Ubuntu came preinstalled on mt laptop... and it kind of annoys me.

On my work machine, I do a pacman -Syyu every week.

Every time, I get >1GB of updates to download, often about 4GB of change.

To borrow @ActionRetro's catchphrase (and overload it a bit),

This is

(i.e., very odd and abnormal)

cc: @pixx

le

(I know, I know, complaining about bloat is "just a meme." Except that it's almost never COMPLETELY a meme. ;P

teamtuck,

@rl_dane @ActionRetro @pixx Holy cow, that's a lot. I was thinking about this the other day. Can you just pick and choose specific updates? It's almost like if everything is working, then why attempt to blow it up? But then again, security is the key and we need to keep our systems updated....

I have done next to nothing all weekend, and whilst part of me is loving it, the other part of me is screaming at me to do something more productive.

So I'm going to backup my home folder in readiness for a nuke & pave of my laptop to go from to , still on (or should I try a new Distro? 🤔) ah, somebody stop me!!!

dukrous,

I finally built myself a new PC and installed on it. One of the last things I did was get PixInsight installed to start working on projects as the skies begin to clear up here in Central Florida. In order to make sure everything works, I pulled up my pics of the Andromeda Galaxy from last year. Here's the finished pic.

kraktoos,
@kraktoos@fosstodon.org avatar

Installed a few days ago and as someone coming from , I have to say that having a package manager that is actually fast is amazing. The difference in speed between pacman and dnf is HUGE

jp,
@jp@lowkey.zone avatar

@kraktoos Especially if you have a fast connection and have parallel downloads enabled! Don't know if that's on by default in Endeavor.

adamw,
@adamw@fosstodon.org avatar

@kraktoos we're fixing it. =) you can use dnf5 instead of dnf on Fedora already, if you like.

Thinking of distro-hopping, any suggestions? Thinking of going for either an arch-based distro such as :artix: or :endeavourOS: or some immutable distro such as :nixos: .

kraktoos,

@Wyatt @Anachron Ah yes, I've always loved to compile everything I use!

@kraktoos is awesome. You can try it without switching distos and just install the package manager.

It seems I always come back to this distro.

strangeculprits,

@Linux_Is_Best Just switched to Endeavour from Manjaro, and really enjoying the little differences so far

Linux_Is_Best,

@justdude

How did you manage to get "Sway" to work?

Whenever I log into "Sway" (regardless of distro), all I see is the task bar above with a number "1" in the left corner and the "clock" in the right corner. I can move my mouse, but cannot click on anything (nothing I see to click on, for that matter, and I have tried clicking on both the 1 and clock). I tried both left and right click.

Furthermore, I cannot even bring up the terminal using keyboard shortcuts.

cfnnm,

And... I'm out of and installed on my laptop (it was already installed on my desktop). Don't get me wrong, I really like . It is fast, easy, and since it is based on it has the newest software.

But precisely because of that it has ended up tiring me. I'm tired of the constant updates, the occasional bugs and quirks that happen because of them, and the sudden changes that such updates might bring. I don't have the time to think about all of that.

levi,

@cfnnm I'm in the same boat. Just left Arch, which I've used since 2006 or something. So tired of the constant updates and small things breaking. Just today I couldn't connect to VPN anymore on my work laptop. Absolute no-go. Switched to Debian on the work laptop and Mint on my old Desktop, which is used for light gaming once a week. It's really liberating and smooth sailing now. 😊

lyze,

Just for fun trying out .

Looks like all proton games on steam run at really low fps with the normal nvidia-(dkms) driver unless I run them with PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1on a GTX 3090 TI.

Any ideas or is that "fine"?

nafnlj,

For whatever reason, my computer won't suspend or hibernate. I have generally assumed it has to do with using DisplayPort for my primary monitor and HDMI for my secondary... but never quite figured it out. It is not a big deal since I turn my computer off when I am not using it anyway. Instead of continuing to dig into the weeds... I decided to install Xscreensaver and enable almost all of the screensavers. Left my computer for about 20 minutes and returned to Pacman on my primary monitor and a dancing wireframe box on my secondary monitor. Highly recommended.

#endeavouros #xfce #xscreensaver #powermanagement #linux

nafnlj,

@Linux_in_a_Bit Not before, no. I tested the XFCE and Xscreensaver packages (running EndeavourOS) and went with the Xscreensaver one. Works without any issue regardless of the power settings.

nafnlj,

@Linux_in_a_Bit Thanks for the hint. I got it working my switching to the XFCE screensaver package and resetting my power saver configuration. Now it properly goes to screensaver and suspend works.

baer,

Just installed on my thinkpad and I have to say that even if i have become a fanboy the last month, is still nice :)
