Firlefanz, (edited ) EDIT: I have given up.
Guys, I'm feeling frustrated and stumped.
Sitting at my sister's home, I can use the WLAN easily. Lappy connects to it automatically.
But I have LAN (yes, a physical cable) in my guest room that would give me better speed. I plug it into the laptop - and it will not connect. I even gave LAN priority in the settings.
I cannot find a setting to tell it to use the darn ethernet cable. Where do I look?
Running Kubuntu / Plasma on an Acer Travelmate.
Firlefanz, Thank you for taking the time to answer. 🙂
I'm going to assume that something is wrong with the cable. Laptop does have an ethernet port, I can plug in the cable. (It works at home, with my own cable.)
Since this is not my home, I won't be able to check the cable in detail. WLAN does work, so it is what it is.
Firlefanz, It does not. I tried that.
I decided to let it ride and assume something is wrong with the cable. Not my home, so I won't be able to check in any detail.
jimt, I moved my backup desktop machine from #Kubuntu to Fedora #Silverblue. I've been using it on my laptop for a couple of months now without significant issue, but still manage to confuse myself once in a while about which toolbox container I am in.
fedora, @jimt you may want to check out Ptyxis. It's a terminal designed around using containers. Maybe it can help?

jezebelley, I managed to finally get Syncterm working by compiling from source. The snap package from the #kubuntu gui package manager didn't work. It would run in terminal but not connect to any outbound web sources.
Now I have full ANSI support and proper BBS-era art! It's absolutely glorious.
Taffer, DNS seems fucky on my laptop, but not for anything else in the house. Kubuntu is haunted (this started after upgrading to 23.10), but I don't have time to switch distros...
Symptoms: Lookups timing out, new connections take too long to start.
Source: Probably Intel's woeful wifi drivers.
Skelemental, @Taffer I’d investigate if you’re attempting ipv6 dns lookups and having to wait for those to time out
Taffer, @Skelemental that’s a great idea, thanks!
oh_that_courtney,
WagesOf, @oh_that_courtney it's a shame too. Wayland is so much more efficient and has been available for years but basically every dev has just ignored it because doing the ground work to switch over isn't sexy.
Kind of reminds me of ipv6. Decades of availability, almost no adoption.
popey, @oh_that_courtney I've been using Wayland by default on 23.10 since I upgraded a week or so back. I've had very few problems, and I use a very diverse and weird combination of applications. I know it's not LTS, but only 6 months until the next one :D
omgubuntu, KDE Plasma 5.27 is now available to users of Kubuntu 22.04 LTS - https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2023/10/install-kde-plasma-5-27-kubuntu-22-04
neroburner, @omgubuntu worked great. Just had to redo one of my panels. Not perfect but not catastrophic either 😁
omgubuntu, @neroburner Phew - glad to hear!

deadbeefmonster, Frustrated in that I can't seem to get #OpenBSD to boot on my Thinkpad X1 Carbon (7th gen). It installs fine, but it seems no amount of bios fiddling will allow it to boot after install (with or without FDE).
I did buy the X1 7th gen because of @jcs's instructions at https://jcs.org/2019/08/14/x1c7 - and followed them, just get nothing, no matter what I try to boot to or what options in the bios I change.
FreeBSD boots and #Kubuntu boots. :\ Back to Kubuntu again for a while. Wasted time is sometimes just wasted time.
jcs, @deadbeefmonster When you installed did you have it initialize the whole disk or install into an existing partition?
deadbeefmonster, @jcs I did whole disk.
Taffer,
diggeloid, @Taffer Fedora Kinoite (immutable KDE-based spin of Fedora workstation) is great. The thing just works all the time, guaranteed. Been using it for many months with an Nvidia card and love it: "toolbox" containers for latest dev tools, and flatpaks for everything else.
It takes some getting used to, but it's well worth the effort IMO.
...however, with all the IBM shenanigans in RedHat land, I've been eyeing OpenSuse Kalpa, which seems to be similar, just less mature.
Taffer, @diggeloid I’m leaning heavily towards OpenSUSE Leap these days, but I might be too lazy/busy to migrate my existing system.
fedora, Thank you for bringing us the Kubuntu Focus line of computers! We love to see systems that come with Linux preinstalled.

Taffer,
seav, I’m using #Kubuntu on one of my laptops and I’m just a bit bummed that we won’t be getting #Plasma6 in this month’s semiannual OS release and would have to wait for the October Kubuntu 24.10 version. Then again, I remember the huge uproar that accompanied the release of Plasma 5 a decade ago, so I think I’m okay with waiting a few months for Plasma 6 (and especially the Wayland support) to be extra stable before upgrading.
