I'm mildly embarrassed I can't think of a better solution for this. 24 export variables for 24 hours.

Schedule is a component that some NPCs will have, and tasks are resources to be dragged and dropped in.

Problem is most will be empty, since tasks take more than 1 'slot' to complete. But I need this easy for a non coder to use.

stephann,
@stephann@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Tearcell An alternative that could work for you:

class_name Slot extends Resource

@export_range(0,23) var hour : int
@export var task : Task

Then you could do:
@export slots : Array[Slot]

Tearcell,
@Tearcell@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@stephann Oh hm, that WOULD be a pretty good alternative. Easy fast mock up too, I'll give it a whirl and see how I like it.

Super-noob question:
I have a very simple 2D platformer with a tilemap to make the background and the platform, and a character with basic movement. I know how to "paint" some of my tiles with the "physics layer" so the character can stand on them etc, but if I try to include a "rigidbody2d", it bounces against my charachter, but passes straight through the floor tiles. Let' s say I am baffled and have no clue which beginner mistake I am making.

lisyarus,
@lisyarus@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@j_bertolotti I've probably seen it, but if I recall correctly Brackey's video should cover it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOhfqjmasi0

j_bertolotti,
@j_bertolotti@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@lisyarus No, no rigid bodies in that tutorial. I have followed it and now I am trying to expand on it, but of course I have no idea what I am doing yet 😬

entry is progressing! The idea here is to build a sort of Castlevania 2 like town with people having set schedules like in stardew valley, as you hunt for specific targets at the right time to not blow your cover.

Work in the last couple days involved a 2d character controller, getting an Astar implementation going, and getting the NPC to follow a very simple schedule.

The prototype for my Horror Folklore gamejame entry. We have some a star graphs on display for an NPC to follow. The NPC goes to 3 separate locations.

In the upcoming 4.3 (currently in beta), the TileMap class has been deprecated and replaced with the streamline TileMapLayer node. We look at how to use it and what's changed.

#godot developers, what's your best practice for Steam cloud saves? Until now I've used the Godot "user data folder" for save games, but obviously Steam has no knowledge of that folder. Just curious what you all do, if you use cloud saves at all.

risingtail,
@risingtail@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@raptor85 @aaron_codes I know how it works 😂 was referring specifically what folder options people are using

raptor85,
@raptor85@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@risingtail @aaron_codes, it honestly doesn't matter, it's wherever your game already stores saves, but OS-wise defaults are app specific folders under "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local" on windows and "$XDG_DATA_HOME" on linux (if XDG_DATA_HOME is not set, you should default to ~/.local/share per desktop spec)

I hate that so many tutorials and whatnot are video rather than text, for a variety of reasons.

If I had copious spare time I'd write tutorials for Godot. Almost all of the Godot instructional material I've found has been video… constantly pausing the video to try out whatever they're talking about is annoying, it takes me 3-4 hours to get through an hour of video tutorial.

#tutorials #godot

tartley,
@tartley@mastodon.social avatar

@Taffer same. Thanks for making explicit a part of why video is so bad for this, which is failed to articulate. That video is appealing because it seems easier to consume, but that only works if you expect to be a passive watcher. Effective consumption instead requires actually trying things out as you go.

poeticAndroid,

@Taffer I hear ya.. For someone with #adhd , it can be hard to focus on what is being said in the video, and pretty annoying to have to pause and unpause for each step in the #tutorial..

Kinda makes me wish #YouTube had a push-to-play option where you had to keep pushing a button for the video to play, and it would automatically pause whenever the window loses focus while I do the step.

So I made the option myself :)

So, wizards, how do you come up with ideas? I've been studying GDScript, have a programming background, and should be able to make something, but an actual idea escapes me. Any advice would be appreciated.

tartley,
@tartley@mastodon.social avatar

@bgardner One Idea: Remake something extremely simple. An early1980s arcade game, maybe. Allow yourself one or two small experimental flourishes. 😁

A long time ago I was an accomplished professional programmer, doing cool graphical things with shaders, had big ambitions for games I wanted to write. The above advice was the best I ever received.

tartley,
@tartley@mastodon.social avatar

@bgardner Right now I'm doing Missile Command, and my flourish is that the screen scrolls just a little, to follow the cursor around, and the ground is slightly curved, like a section of the surface of a planet, so as the screen scrolls left and right, it also rotates, just slightly. Makes the play area come alive, feeling vertiginous and dynamic.
