Sometimes I wondered whether my Peavey amp had an effects loop, whether PWR AMP IN was return, and PRE AMP OUT was send.

Now I know it. I'd noticed the jacks years ago, but I only hooked something up to them today, for the first time.

I may buy an amp sim pedal and plug it into the effects return. I'm thinking of the JOYO American Sound - it might make my Peavey sound like a Fender. A bit.

A bright blue DigiTech PDS 1002 effects pedal sitting on the dusty black tolex top of a big 80's Peavey twin, its input and output jacks connected to the preamp out and power amp in jacks of the amp. It works!

eyesquash,
@eyesquash@mastodon.world avatar

Does anyone have thoughts on the $40 JOYO American Sound vs the $400 Universal Audio Woodrow?

I don't expect to use stereo or cab and mic sim, bright channel toggle, and on...but they could be really handy for DI recording or house sound.

Trying out learning the intro of the AAL - Micro-aggressions. I'm yet to find correct tone for this, and I think the right hand is supposed to be muting the lower strings, but it seems to be coming together?

There is a thinline between a Stratocaster and a Telecaster and it runs through Nashville.

Explanation:

The Nashville Tele is basically if Garth Brooks were a . Nashville Tele is a guitar that can't decide if it's made for rock or country.

Everyone please meet Callie, taking a break next to two of her instrument siblings.. She is helping me complete my first album ever, and we have two songs out of six done! 🖤✔️ Callie is a Taylor 512ce in urban red ironbark. She’s unreal. A shorter scale length ebony fretboard is very comfortable and adds mellowness to the slightly smaller body’s tone. :blobcat:

A close up of Callie the Taylor 512ce acoustic guitar. Her crelicam ebony saddle and brown tortoiseshell binding are so lovely.
A vertical shot down the fretboard of Callie the Taylor 512ce acoustic guitar on her onstage guitar stand. The red in the ironbark is warm and rich with dark big netting in the wood. Her pick guard is tortoiseshell.

Workflow improvement - dry erase sheet for listing the blocks of a song. A more detailed sheet I showed a few weeks ago was good for composing and planning but too small to follow for recording and I’d get lost between takes for what section I’m in. Really need a karaoke style display on my iPad that shows song sections as the track progresses but this worked well today.

So I could get a Muffuletta 6-in-1 #Muff #fuzz #pedal for $200 r/t $250 while they're on sale.
Triangle, Pi, Ram's Head, Russian, Ciivil War. I read that the mids vary.
#GAS #guitar #effectPedal #GearSquad

L0wKey,
@L0wKey@mastodon.online avatar

@eyesquash
Muffs are a thing you either love or you don’t, an absolutely iconic sound! The different variants are voiced differently in the mids as you say, but they are all muffs! Don’t expect there to be more than 1 sweet spot on any of the knobs in any if the settings! It’s not a subtle circuit.

If it’s a toe dip, there are cheaper places to start. https://reverb.com/item/82040544-electro-harmonix-nano-big-muff-pi-distortion-pedal-with-box for example. That said, if the price is right the muffletta is well regarded as a solid offering.

Get your fuzz on!

Had a bit of a session this morning, but then an early out-for-breakfast, so have been delving back into related activity this afternoon.

I compile music charts in a way that I prefer for easy reference while playing, and I've been a bit backlogged on songs I wanted to capture that way.

psj,
@psj@ottawa.place avatar

@ottaross what were you working on today?

this morning i was running through https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laXY5e5JaV0 which i probably learned how to play in the early 90s, but i today focused on playing it /as cleanly as possible/, which is a, er, departure for me. very humbling. these hands are not exactly precision instruments.

all fun though!

ottaross,
@ottaross@mastodon.social avatar

@psj I had forgotten Simon & Garfunkel's "Only Living Boy in NY" – Must've heard it during the week, which had it ear-worming me.

It's musically pretty simple, but vocally does a few fun things, so I worked through that and transcribed the chords for future enjoyment.

A couple of ELO songs I've been typing up too, as I'd been playing them a bit off the net.

The Smiths song is familiar. Kudos to be able to play it - rather infectious.

I mixed a song a couple of nights ago but didn’t get around to posting it to my alonetone or hearthis.at accounts so it just sat there on my laptop. Now it is out there for the whole wide world to ignore.

I think it kinda sounds like crap, but the song itself is okay, I think. You can probably hear the edits in the chorus because I wrote a melody without leaving any space for that pesky little breathing thing. Oops.

The lead guitar was through a nearly cranked amp. That was fun. Noisy as hell, but fun.

Help me choose the knobs, round 3.

  • small cupcake
  • more white knurled
  • stratty

Which would you pick?

image/jpeg
image/jpeg

LadyMarth01,
@LadyMarth01@mstdn.games avatar

@optilude Cupcake. I quite like the design of the knurled one, but the very clean white seems to clash with the pickups and pickguard; in the opposite direction, the stratty knobs are too yellowed to fit in.

Ok I have to ask: what’s the deal with Orange amps? I see them frequently online in guitar and gear Facebook groups and other forums. People seem to love them. I’ve never tried one though so I’m just curious.

NigelTufnel,
@NigelTufnel@guitar.rodeo avatar

@Theblueone @RuVerb @Cyrus @eyesquash I tried a 30watt head / cab combo at a California guitar store back in March. Looked great. Played just clean tones and it was fine. I prefer a Fender style 6V6 to the Marshall style EL34 circuit so take that for what it’s worth. I can’t see myself buying an amp with EL34s.

Theblueone,
@Theblueone@mastodon.social avatar

@NigelTufnel @RuVerb @Cyrus @eyesquash I’ve never been a fan of Marshall’s at all. Something in the tone stack that just hits me in some sorta synesthesia-like level with my fingers on the fretboard. It’s almost physically painful for me to play through a Marshall.

DomSathanas,
@DomSathanas@ravenation.club avatar

Today I finally got my hands on a Big Muff pedal so that I can ape the Siamese Dream sound. Hopefully it can make up for the pain of the past few days. mr_daemon,
@mr_daemon@untrusted.website avatar

@eyesquash I have a Big Muff Pi for my bass, it pretty much sounds like the platonic ideal fuzz IMO, vibrant and analog. Mine looks somewhat different (it's green), but I don't imagine it would sound vastly different

mkb,
@mkb@mastodon.social avatar

@eyesquash @flockofnazguls Guitar tone is so subjective. Especially in the distortion family, there will always be people who dislike a particular pedal. That’s fine. If you find your bliss, you won.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

This is my general recommendation for the best acoustic for the price. They play and feel like an $800 guitar. The tone, neck, and overall quality is phenomenal. You can occasionally find deals on these around $300. The "folk" version is incredibly versatile, so it is worthy for unplugged campfires as well as playing live. It's a solid workhorse that won't have a problem keeping up with a Martin or Taylor and won't give you "glass mandolin syndrome".

@vwbusguy What's "glass mandolin syndrome"?

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@negative12dollarbill When you get a nice instrument and you're too intimidated to play it because of the cost and/or fear of damaging it.

@jwcph You can buy packs of 10 e strings. I do. Sorry I can't say anything more apposite.

eyesquash,
@eyesquash@mastodon.world avatar

@jwcph Also, I haven't tried abrasive cord, but I hear it can be used to smooth string paths. Stewmac sells it, and so do other places.
