A pair of eyes that say "please don't crush me"

and also a second pair of eyes

and also a third pair of eyes

I'm not sure who this guy is, on first sight I thought it might be a pseudoscorpion, but on closer inspection it does not appear to have pincers - so it seems to be some kind of spider.

Another photo of the same spider from a diagonal angle, showing four eyes and the front legs, which are quite beefy. The spider is dark colored and standing on a wood table. Most of the body is blurry and out of focus.
A side view of the same spider. This shows that the body is elongated and dark and has a few bright yellow spots on the side.

Wait in entomology school do they really cover the "many theories" about what would happen if "the insect world turns on man?"

New jumping spider! Sitticus palustris and Naphrys pulex are the closest options in my spider book, but I'm not sure. I often see P. audax and Platycryptus in the house, but these little brown ones stick to the lawn.

I believe this bold jumping spider made a hideout in my portable solar panel while it was folded up. Is this just their bed where they were sleeping, or did they put eggs here that will hatch? In other words, can I safely clean this construction off now that the spider is out and about, or does my solar panel need to live outside now so baby won't take over my house?

A webby pouch attached to the cloth of my little Anker solar panel. It looks like it opened one side so it could leave.

It's been a while since I have been on here. It's hard to find time to be online or outdoors as much anymore. But I couldn't say not to doing another table at the National Butterfly Center for today. Always exciting to talk about .

One of the challenges of microphotography is that things move around a lot.

Even this spider very much trying to stand still on its net was getting shaken around violently by the wind.

Whenever I read a word with the prefix "anarcho-", my brain first sees "arachno-" before unscrambling the letters.

I'm not sure what an arachno-capitalist would be, but it's probably more interesting than an anarcho-capitalist.

The Aphantochilus crab spider mimics the color, shape, size, and texture of the turtle ants it preys upon. Ecuador.

Such a lovely spider, though I doubt the poor ants agree.

futurebird,
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

@barrygoldman1 @alexwild Ant mimics use ants as cover— but also sometimes eat them. The general shape and color is more about fooling birds I suspect. Very few creatures really like to eat ants— not much there but fussy legs and the danger of getting mobbed.

My spouse got a bite on her hand while working in the garden a few days ago. After 2 days, the spot had become swollen and a purple spot formed at the bite location, so she went to the doctor.

Brown recluse bite.

Now she's on antibiotics, got a tetanus shot, and has a cream to apply.

Wear gloves when working in the garden, folks.

spin webs to catch prey. They’re also trapping a wealth of genetic information

captured by may be a hidden resource that scientists can use to track endangered animals and monitor , according to new research.

By Katie Hunt, CNN

Published Feb 6, 2024

"Spiders spin silken webs to capture flies and other tiny prey. They’re also trapping a wealth of DNA from the surrounding environment, a hidden resource that Australian scientists said could be used to track endangered animals and monitor ecosystems.

"Spiderwebs collected from two locations around Western Australia’s Perth — Perth Zoo and the Karakamia woodland sanctuary — revealed the genetic signature of 93 animals, including native kangaroos and koalas and captive elephants and zebras, according to a study published last week in the journal iScience.

"Spiderwebs might be a useful way to keep an eye on what animals are around us, according to study coauthor Joshua Newton, a doctoral student at Curtin University’s School of Molecular and Life Sciences near Perth.

"'These webs, often overlooked in biodiversity studies, proved to be reservoirs of genetic information,' Newton said in a press release.

"'With only trace amounts of DNA needed to identify animals, this cheap and non-invasive method could be a game-changer in how we explore and protect our terrestrial .'"
