I’m free now but was arrested with several others and briefly detained by SFPD today at Wells Fargo headquarters. We held a vigil inside to solemnly recognize all the people and lands and beings that WF is hurting and killing through their funding of fossil fuel and other projects.
@plants I showed Draba aizoides yesterday, which was the first #flower to open in the #garden on Sunday, but several more opened yesterday, in time for #EarthDay
2 vids in replies show all the flowers and a short walk.
Sunny heading for 18C today, so there should be lots more Crocus at least today! #spring#Alberta#RockGarden#florespondence#BloomScrolling
Dear friends, #EarthDay, the yearly hashtag version is past. Let's make it at least a semi-regular practice to honor and respect our patient and wise Mother. Here is a photo of a wetlands reconstruction in #Truckee#California. In the distance is a ski area. It also has a multi-use path used for foot, pedaled, and wheeled users. A lovely place for a meditative stroll, run, or bike ride.
Happy #EarthDay! Our company is committed to sustainability, and to show it, today we are pledging that by 2030, all of our plowshares will contain at least 10% post-consumer recycled swords!
On this #earthday, you can start doing your part. Filter your home water and buy glass or metal containers to port it around instead of buying water filled plastic bottles that are barely and rarely recycled. Buy your meat and fish wrapped in paper, not plastic film on a bed of styrofoam. Tell your local restaurant to use the new paper and compostable boxes instead of often black plastic (totally non-recyclable) containers or styrofoam clamshells. The more people that choose, the more the people who want to engage with us change.
Random #EarthDay tip: don't buy compostable forks and spoons. Go to your thrift store, and purchase a handful of real, metal forks and spoons (usually 50 cents or less for each). Pair those with washable napkins. Use them, wipe them off and wrap them in your napkin, take those all home and wash 'em.
Which foods have the most plastics? CNN says ninety percent of animal and vegetable protein samples tested in research published in February tested positive for microplastics. Other studies said vegetables can absorb microplastics through their root systems, and salt and sugar can also contain plastic. Here's the full story, including some advice on reducing your exposure. Tell us: Which of these proteins do you think contains the most plastic?
If we have a long-term future as a species, it will be because we discover that every day must be Earth Day! Hopefully, we will do this in time… Meanwhile, Happy Earth Day from the SETI Institute!
@compost started clearing space to instal some solar panels, and continued creating raised beds, and added to my hedge to keep the wind off my wee apple trees. Felt very productive!
