PAX turning into a full-on fan convention minus the indie press/business layer makes that less useful for promo/pitching, and E3 is dead of course, which means

... god do we really have to do GDC now? Is it really the last one standing, other than Gamescom? That's miserable! AGH!

GDC had even already (quietly) been becoming a press hotspot, so that's only likely to accelerate after this year.

@glassbottommeg GDC is a multimillion dollar company that gas-lights people into working for free or little money while charging thousands of dollars for a ticket and then puts most of the talks behind a paywall.

sinbad,
@sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@glassbottommeg There’s also EGX. TBH the only one I ever enjoyed was Rezzed (now WASD) because it was cosy but I guess it might not be best for getting word out

@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@glassbottommeg so you're saying reaching people via socials is relatively much more important now, as elon burns down twitter?

freakrho,
@freakrho@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@glassbottommeg what's the state of indiecade?

kingdomfantasy6,

@glassbottommeg I admit I enjoyed the one GDC I went to...

But also, well, I hardly need to repeat the annual inaccessibility talking points surrounding it.

And I STILL wish they'd actually pay their speakers. Like. Tickets cost more than I made last year yet speakers still aren't paid? Bullshit.

@glassbottommeg Huh, for me PAX East is still my major convention and something I look forward to covering every year. It helps it's a 2-hour drive away, I'll admit, but it's a ton of fun to meet and see everything, whether that be due to a million appointments or just wandering the floor. I hadn't heard PAX is changing its focus, though, so is this just more of an organic change?

glassbottommeg,
@glassbottommeg@peoplemaking.games avatar

@Jamesac68 it's organic. PAX just doesn't work like it did pre-pandemic, seemingly. Doesn't bubble up in social media. Little press engagement. Just kinda, fan convention.

Jamesac68,
@Jamesac68@mastodon.social avatar

@glassbottommeg It's definitely been smaller the last couple years, no question. 2022 I went on just on Sunday and didn't even spend the whole day there. 2023 I did almost the whole weekend, although I did end up leaving early Sunday due to running out of steam and having seen most everything. I'm hoping 2024 can be back to full strength, or at least close to it. The pandemic did a number on PAX but it seems to be recovering.

rockhamster,
@rockhamster@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@glassbottommeg I'd support a replacement to GDC with talks if there was one that will put up all talks for free and doesn't charge a silly amount for people to attend.

Farbs,
@Farbs@mastodon.social avatar

@rockhamster @glassbottommeg My vote is demolish them all to level the playing field for people who don't live in the area / can't risk COVID / just really don't want COVID.

Di4na,
@Di4na@hachyderm.io avatar

@Farbs @rockhamster @glassbottommeg i mean... this would be a youtube channel with a production, writing and editing crew to help devs shoot and build talks...

We could do this in theory. The problem ofc is how you pay everyone.

@glassbottommeg As an engineer, Pax Dev was the best. I was sad to see that just never reappear.

It was small, which is also why I liked GDC Austin, and the no press/no company names policy made it feel like folks were less guarded.

esdin,
@esdin@peoplemaking.games avatar

@glassbottommeg Yeah we haven't participated meaningfully in a PAX West / PAX East post-pandemic.

@glassbottommeg I would love to see MIGS grow and take a bigger role. I’ve never been, and I think I’m going to skip this year, but I’ve heard good things. https://migs.biz/en/

TomF,
@TomF@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@glassbottommeg The press/biz side of GDC has always been the worst part, so it sucks it's now the only outlet for that side of things.
