#3GoodThingsToday

(all from yesterday, but that counts.)

  1. holiday weekend, and I already knocked out the (very smol) work I'd promised to do, so now I can relax the rest of the day (already relaxed yesterday).

  2. Excellent day yesterday, along with a nommy sushi dinner to wrap it up.

  3. Made it to level 25 in Wanikani! #japanese Now manga is waiting for me, and google translate is helping a LOT. 😁

@chiasm Good to hear all of this.

@TonyStark Hey there, I hope you are taking time to breathe and take care of yourself! I saw this on someone else's timeline and thought the absurdity reflects the kind of situation we find ourselves in-- 😜

Today I learned the equivalent of the phrase 'Food Porn' is '飯テロ' or 'Meshi Tero', where the 'tero' part is a borrow word for 'terrorism'.

The literal translation is 'Food Terrorism'. Consider that in relation to the Japanese penchant for filling their streams with pictures of every single thing they eat.

I learned a character in the other day that was defined as amount; or picture frame. 🤬

I was swearing at that--how can one word have meanings that dissimilar? How can I remember that?

But then today walking in the city I passed the Latitude nightclub. I'd seen that in other cities-- it is a good name for a nightclub, in the sense of permission to bend the rules a bit.

Or a line in the map marking distance from the equator.

🤬 How did one word get such dissimilar meanings??

😂

@a0dbxza

I believe this was my first Masumura. Japanese conditions were so tough these directors had to do 3 films every year.
scenario adapted from Tanizaki written by the great Kaneto Shindo.
Masumura +Shindo + Ayako Wakao ! you dont have often such gifted People.

My baby sister is in town to visit. She likes #Japanese stuff (#anime, #Subarus, sushi, etc) and #thrift shopping. What do I need to show her while she's in #Portland?

Our itinerary includes the Japanese Garden, H-Mart, Kinokuniya, Hollywood Thrift, all the #vintage shops on Hawthorne.

What are some deep cuts, super weird kitchy #pdx spots I might not have heard of?

I bought some Black Black gum (Japanese product) from Amazon and got a package with random yellow pieces of gum included. Anyone know the difference from the original gum? I didn’t try translating the packaging before opening it (and ripping off half of the writing explaining the yellow pieces). 🤦‍♀️

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@jezlyn that packaging says something like “intense shock mint”

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@squipo @jezlyn I think it’s meant to mean ビリビリ as in getting an electric shock or a rattling sound, so “intense electric mint” or something along that line

Saw a press release that mentioned / expansion "in the gulf" and assumed, naturally, that they meant the Gulf.

but no, they meant the US Gulf Coast.

In Japan, we call this “Hotchkiss”😊
The first stapler imported to Japan was made by this company 😉

My wife and I were talking about household items that we have been using for a long time on a regular basis. I got a 45 years old toolkit and 40 years old nail clipper 😉 But she has been using this Hotchkiss for 40 years 😊

I'm still learning Japanese vocabulary on the side. Every so often I'm excited to realise I can figure out the kanji for words I already knew. For example, I just now realised that "dojo" → dō jō → 道 場 → "way place", i.e. the place where you study the Way (whichever dō that is — kendo, judo, etc).

Another fun one is "daimyo", who are your old-timey samurai clan chieftains. I always used to mispronounce this as "diam-yo", but it's actually dai-myō → 大名 → "big name"!
