Any implicit standard on how to contribute #AltText on someone else's media, that apps like #Moshidon load up from replies? Any of the apps that are about to implement similar thing?
@jupiter_rowland The intent of my request doesn't include technologically modifying someone else's post, no-no. What I meant is a form of suggested content: alt-text contributed in replies. When I think about it twice, such system is prone to bad acting, but so far immediate #AltText suggestion and fetching in replies seem to have benefits that outweigh disadvantages.
At least, it's better than to disregard entire posts just because author had no time for descriptions or missed a cue. Plus TIL there is an entire bunch of people that want to help caption things and it's already so integral to fedi that it feels less-than-modern to have no standard of displaying such suggested content in place where you really want it (alt-text right next to image, captionista's name included).
Thank you for the hashtags, though! They look like a step forward that apps can boot from. Again, it's not exactly a feature I'd expect to see in every client, just more specialized/advanced ones.
@jupiter_rowland What I have described is flawed in lieu of common delimiter for several media files in alt-text and definition of such text, so I understand why we might not be quite there yet! It is ultimately better when authors are considerate of captioning.
@GhostOnTheHalfShell What I end up doing in #MastodonWeb for finding whether a certain name is in my followers list is press "Followers" and scroll down extensively with a page search and name entered until I (don't) find who I need. Such is the trick with pagination systems and manual search. I wish there was a better way to filter such lists throughout the interface, as you're requesting...
Anyone got any knowledge of good printers particularly suitable for high-quality printing things like cards, pin badge art, posters, etc? Thanks in advance! #art#printing#AskFedi
Update: we're probably going for the Epson EcoTank ET-3850. We'll see how it goes! Oh and fun fact: we can never have a conversation about ink and paper in our home without thinking of and/or mentioning @crashglasshouses!
I got a DM about how to host a Website as anonymous as possible, especially viewed from the outside with as little attack surface as possible. I already threw a bunch of my ideas in the room, but maybe you can think of something I haven't thought of...
Please just answer to this post if something crosses your mind from security over hoster to the website itself, I will link it to the person.
Hi, is there a way to disable image's alt text showing up in iceshrimp instance? It is little disturbing. I think there should be that option, but I can't find it at settings. #iceshrimp#firefish#askfedi
Does anyone who uses #OpenTracks on #Android know where marker photos are stored? I took some pictures on a ride today, but I can't find the actual picture anywhere outside the app.
A friend of mine has a dumb TV that she wishes to use to watch various "internet" based services like BritBox, YouTube, and Netflix. I suspect that an Android based "media player" box is the easiest way (without buying a television) for me to make that happen. She does not want to hook up a laptop to the TV and use it to play media.
Is there a better option than an Android box? And if not, what do I need to know about buying one of the many available boxes? One of my concerns is that at some point the lack of updates will force her to buy a new box. Is that a likely thing?
@jmhorner Ah, yeah, then a smart TV is going to be the best option for that. I know both my grandma and my parents have been pretty happy with their Roku TVs, particularly because using it is super simple, with very simple remotes.
(also I just realized you specifically said she doesn't want to hook up a laptop to the TV in your original post 🤦🏻♀️ I totally missed that)
@bluestocking I guess what I am bumping up against is the fact that I simply don't want to give her smart TV functionality, but she can't watch the content she wants without it. Ugh! The content landscape today is just awful.

Question: is there an alternative frontend to Substack – like Scribe to Medium? I loathe the platform and never share articles from there, but there is at least one publication that would be worth it.
@jmhorner I'm dangerously close cuz there's always discount codes for it but now I'm just so confused because they have 'tiers' and I can't for the life of me figure out the actual difference having never even used it 🤔
