Me [walking into hardware store wearing bike helmet]: I’ll take two of the 18kg of organic dirt.

Sarcastic guy at counter: You gonna ride them home on your bike?!

Me: Uh ... yeah actually ....

#CargoBikes are such a superpower you forget how impossible everything seemed before.

just after 2pm today while it's raining for a few minutes?

no

It was kinda rainy and I had to carry a bunch of tools to Beaverton, so I took an appropriate for that task.

@HayiWena yeah, you have to get the speed and timing right, pedal position, gearing, etc. This rim and tire setup is pretty good at preventing pinch flats too, I just wish it had 36 spokes. The slow and ratcheting 2-step technique from the 3rd video is what I would do with kids on. Blooper reel:

ended up with the cranks vertical right when I needed power

Somehow, was out of carts. I don't know how that happens. There were people waiting at the entrance, trailing other people to their cars to grab their carts.

"No sweat," I told the security people at the store entrance. "I brought my own cart."

Same bike, but this time the shot from behind the rear wheel. A black pannier hangs from the rear rack. The bike frame is white, with a blue box on a black platform. A hailong battery sits atop the platform. Same groceries in the box.

I made two nucs today, my bees already have a lot of breed. Unfortunately we lost some hives during winter so I need to get to a sustainable level again.

German "progressives" are so obsessed with taking right wing trolls serious. Trying to argue with them and convince them with facts...

One extremely tiring trope in this area relates to . One might call it "Look how much I can carry on my cargobike!" WHO are you trying to convince?

enobacon,
@enobacon@urbanists.social avatar

@odoruhako so many people who drive their dog a short distance to the park aren't even aware that this can be an easy ride in a barkfiets, or new parents who think they need a car/second car. I've not seen particularly much of this from Germany but half of car trips in the US are under three miles, so there are quite a few people to convince besides the ones who decide transportation priorities and particularly need to be exposed to the idea of bikes as more than recreational exercise devices.

Who has $9k to spend on and wants to try this? With the motor and (in the rear wheel), front suspension, cable steering, should be quite the ride (caveat really steep hills vs 130lb bike with hub motor in 26in wheel, you need to keep some speed up and probably need dual batteries, but you can check on the ebikes.ca motor/trip simulator vs your actual hills.)

bikescape,
@bikescape@mastodon.green avatar

@enobacon Looks like a nice first design, but I’d need a mid-drive motor, belt drive, suspension seat post, an upright (Dutch) riding position, and a lockable, covered cargo box. (My next will probably be a Riese & Muller since that’s the closest I can find in the US.)

enobacon,
@enobacon@urbanists.social avatar

@bikescape I have this motor in a 20in wheel with the slow winding on my tandem, and a bbs02 mid drive on a different bike. Ideally I would do both together for the big hills and big loads but would rather the regen hub on bakfiets be in the front and slightly smaller like the EZ (needs a clutchless planetary mod.) Both together on my edgerunner longtail is feasible off-the-shelf though, keeping the weight on the rear wheel.

Electric bikes from Decathlon have been catching our eye for some time now. One key model - the R500e Longtail - needed a closer look. Now the review is done our tester would like to hang on to it, which is about as good an endorsement as they come: https://www.cyclingelectric.com/reviews/decathlon-r500e-cargo-bike-review

Ride with tomorrow 2pm from Irving Park to egg hunt at Grant park, and back to the start. Kids pedaling will set the pace (or bring if yours are still in the scoot bikes and training wheels stage.)
