Using cargo bikes: “[…] you end up with a bike I wouldn't want to use for a ride unless I absolutely needed its cargo-carrying capacity. In fact, if all you need is a couple of items, it's probably better to throw on a backpack and take a regular bike to the store. A cargo bike is the first hardware I've tested that really only makes sense as a second bike.”
How regulation spurs innovation, and not the other way around: low-emission zones and cycle lanes in Europe are birthing a revolution in "last mile" logistics that results in massively reduced vehicle fatalities, cleaner air, and quieter cities:
@SRLevine asks about sidewalk finds, which I probably take advantage of more often that necessary:
Q4. Do you have suggestions for a cute hashtag for stuff found on the road (or in free piles) while biking? The best ones I got were TwoWheelThriftShop and ReduceReuseReBicycle, maybe something inclusive of other cycle types?
(added by me: And if what's something awesome that you've picked up from a free pile while riding?)
four-wheeled cargo #ebikes, sometimes referred to as #biketrucks or #bikevans, haven’t been legal in #NYC due to local ordinances that limit #cargobikes to three wheels and a maximum width of 36 inches.
The humble bike trailer is a cheap (used: $120ish) and easy way to start biking with cargo. I mainly use mine to haul groceries, but I also use it to take materials to work events, cats to the vet, pick up Christmas trees, 🍕 etc. Caution: it may make you want to buy a cargo bike
@GordonOfSeattle when the 1st kid was a toddler, I got this trailer and mainly used it as a stroller to walk them to the grocery store and bring stuff home. Later, coupling the trailer to their bike let them pedal the whole way there and back with a boost from me jogging along behind. (Tip #BikeTooter, you have to mount this hitch upside-down on the 16in wheels.) #cargoBikes#EvenA5yo#quaxing#CarryShitOlympics#ClimateAction#OneLessCar
people are like: "Bikes are nice if you have time, I have to drive my kid to school."
taking my kid to school on #eBikes + #CargoBikes = 8min round-trip 😎
#drivers will yell "you're going to get your kids killed on that thing" at parents on #cargoBikes but pushing your kids in a stroller, on a crosswalk with the walk signal, is far riskier. 😞
Spotted on the Wells High hill in Hillsdale, nature is healing etc. I took a picture of this bike with my phone but software is all a lie so it's still from the video #BikeTooter I think it's #omnium#cargoBikes? Is that a chair? I don't think I saw a motor but what's happening on that seat tube? #eBikes?
Is the #HillTopper motor and little "sprinter" battery enough for this #supercargo to climb Terwilliger after riding up Mt Tabor? Kinda? Not really, but I had a second inverter battery pack to charge it up a bit, shoulda plugged it in earlier but I did make it almost to the Chart House before it turned acoustic. #cargoBikes#pdxBikes#eBikes
Realized I can just park my car (which I rarely drive) next to the playground with kid’s bike + trike inside, treat it as a storage locker, and just go over there when he wants to practice. Oh, it’s only three blocks away, but believe me, the energy we expend just getting there safely on said vehicles (dealing with hills, crossing streets twice, staying on sidewalk) means that the opportunity to enjoy the large open space is considerably limited once we get there. #BikeTooter#cycling#seabikes
@lioracle#cargoBikes are so great for transporting kids and their bikes past those inhospitable areas to the nearest park/playground/bikeway. The xtracycle with lower cargo rails -> slot in the wheel, tie off the top + bungee on the handlebar and tow it. @ShawneMartinez has built a similar setup with the rear rack on his bullitt bucket e-bike.
How am I going to get three armloads of groceries from a half mile away without using a 3000lb wagon? I'll have to walk there and back at least twice just to carry it all. Woe is me... suffering. j/k, obvs #CargoBikes exist.
