Titus Canyon
Titus Canyon in Death Valley National Park is an amazing section of the park that has so much to see along the way.
This image was captured at the crest of the ridge as you enter the canyon. Beautiful, colorful mountains are the reward for making the trip. As a bonus, the Ghost Town of Ledfield is in the canyon. See the full image here: https://pixels.com/featured/titus-canyon-bill-gallagher.html

Titus Canyon Exit

After taking a very enjoyable, somewhat nerve-wracking drive through Titus Canyon the road comes to an end. No this isn't the end but seems to be as you approach the cliff walls that are close to vertical.
Titus Canyon changes from a beautiful wide canyon and winds its way through a nearly vertical slot canyon.

https://geotripper.blogspot.com/2024/02/echoes-of-watery-paradise-in-forsaken.html There is a simply astounding phenomenon happening in Death Valley right now: the faint echo of a very different past. More pics at the link.

Titus Canyon

Titus Canyon in Death Valley National Park is an amazing section of the park that has so much to see along the way.
Take the one way road just west of the old Nevada ghost town of Rhyolite. This road will allow for smaller SUVs but 4WD is recommended.
Be sure to stop at the old ghost town od Leadfield as you make your through the canyon. See the full image here: https://fineartamerica.com/featured/titus-canyon-bill-gallagher.html

DVNP video of current flash flooding near Zabriske Point.

ai6yr,

@paulashby So, you're saying camping in today would have been a bad idea?

It's still early, but a serious gully washer for currently being spit out by the ICON weather model, on Sunday night. 2.43 inches in three hours is serious (catastrophic?) flash flooding in those desert environments.

ai6yr,

Also a gully washer currently predicted by ICON in (flash floods likely... seems like a yearly occurrence there now... tends to be catastrophic there, too!).

Free National Park entrance day. Hint: if you're going to Death Valley, take extra water and travel with more than one vehicle. Not record-breaking, but really... 114F

Two got lost, attempted to drive across salt flat in and got stuck last month; man treated for heat illness (will be charged with illegal off-road driving and the resulting damage to the park - probably caused damage that will take a very long time to disappear)

ai6yr,

#Landsat #Thermal view of Death Valley National Park. Just realized you fan use the thermal satellite sensors to determine where is likely to be the hottest part of the park, based on thermal signature from other days. (ie if you REALLY want to experience 131F, probably localized microcclimate) #CAwx #satellite #DeathValley #NationalPark

ai6yr,

Here's Furnace Creek, Death Valley. The green area you see is the (ridiculous) Furnace Creek Ranch Golf Course, which for some reason, exists in the middle of a National Park.

Death Valley visitors drawn to the hottest spot on Earth during ongoing U.S. heat wave

Although I'd rather be sitting in the shade of a friendly tree, by a Maine lake, surrounded by majestic conifers, we need to get ready for our climate future.

Interesting (but sad) death, Death Valley National Park; man found dead, air conditioning in his vehicle was not functional. In this kind of heat, you likely want to travel in pairs or in a convoy so if you have a breakdown or vehicle issue, you do not perish of heat illness. https://www.nps.gov/deva/learn/news/fatality-7-3-2023.htm
