So…re-watched #VforVendetta (2005) after almost 20 yrs & let's just say the Wachowski sisters-McTeigue adaptation of a Thatcher-era comic, swims in a sick miasma of #DejaVu, bolding how our current fascism was previewed by progressive/POC critics of Reagan, Thatcher, Bush(es). Set post-fascist takeover, w/a choleric Hitlerian dictator enriched by corruption & profit off a plague released to scapegoat "outsiders" & spread fear.
I get so tired of movies where people know what happens (deja vu, time loop etc) and know that certain things will happen due to their actions and still do the same thing expecting to stop the events.
How does that make sense at all? If your actions cause a chain reaction, shouldn't you stop?
It's so annoying when they persist despite knowing what will happen instead of trying a different course of action ... Or not doing anything at all?
You’ve all heard of déjà vu, when we wrongly believe have experienced a novel situation in the past. But do you know of its twin, jamais vu? Science Alert elaborates: https://flip.it/SvZw3q #Science#Psychology#DejaVu
@ScienceDesk I guess that mantra / meditation uses this effect.
To empty the mind the repetition of sound can be helpful.
It’s similar to the described jamais vue that occurs if you say or write a word over and over again and it gets meaningless.
I wrote about the summer of 1988, when a dramatic heat wave almost woke America up to global warming.
From an editorial in the Burlington Free Press:
"In the summer of ’88, it is possible to feel the walls of the future closing in. The heat has been endless and stifling, but harder to bear is the little zing of fear that future summers will be worse. ... Next year, we can shrug, and adapt. Find cleaner beaches, or give up swimming in the lake; invest in air-conditioning; accustom ourselves to more expensive food. But this summer unhappily recalls the greeting-card cliche, ‘Today is the first day of the rest of your life.’ Is the summer of ’88 what the future holds?”
Thirty-five years later and the words still ring true.
