Dollar Tree and its subsidiary Family Dollar are closing 1,000 stores.
According to Dollar Tree CEO Rick Dreiling, who makes 951 times the $14,702 median pay of his employees, “Persistent inflation and reduced government benefits continue to pressure the lower-income consumers that comprise a sizable portion of Family Dollar’s customer base."
Corporate profits account for about 53% of greedflation.
Dollar Tree employees are among the top recipients of government safety net programs, such as Medicaid and food stamps (SNAP) benefits.
Maybe, just maybe, if predatory corporate chain stores like Dollar Tree would pay their employees a living wage, they could generate profit the good old fashioned way, by selling retail goods to customers that need or want them. Just a thought.

Two decades ago, my life changed forever: hearing #BruceSchneier explain that "#security" doesn't exist in the abstract. You can only be secure from some threat. A fire alarm won't protect you from burglaries. A condom won't protect you from mass shootings. It seems obvious, but how often do we hear about "security" without any mention of who is being made secure, and from which threat?
These benefits are distributed via debit cards - #EBTCards - that lack the basic security measures every other kind of card has had for years. They're simple magstripe cards, lacking basic #ChipAndPin defenses, to say nothing of contactless countermeasures.
That means that fraudsters can - and do - install #skimmers in the point-of-sale terminals used by benefits recipients to withdraw their cash benefits, pay for food using #SNAP (AKA #FoodStamps), and receive other benefits.
I’ve often complained that when the US “ended welfare as we know it” (in 1996) no one kept track of what happened to the people who were on welfare. How many lost their apartments? Became drug addicts? Went to jail? Died?
There’s no doubt in my mind all of these things happened as a consequence. But we’ll never know the numbers. People with money and power didn’t want to talk about it. They didn’t want to know.
