Hoverflies are the most recent to investigate my edibility. That big toe is getting pretty calloused after a few weeks of being barefoot, might be too tough even for macerating fly spit.

This is a Batman Hoverfly (Myathropa florea) a very bright, attractive insect with heavy wasp vibes.

A new hoverfly for me, the Crimson-belted Hoverfly (Brachypalpoides lentus). A predominantly woodland species, breeding in dead wood. not the best photo, but the only one I was able to get!

Man könnte denken, dass die Schwarze Augenfleck-#Schwebfliege (#Eristalinus sepulchralis) eine leicht bestimmbare Schwebfliegenart ist, aber es kommt z. B. auf deren Augenbehaarung an.

As always, the Sylphium is the place to find the more exotic visitors. This is the big, unmistakable Hornet Hoverfly (Volucella zonaria). Restricted still to warmer areas of England.

These hover flies might be my favourite insects this year, especially when they are drawn to my favourite flowers on our balcony.
