#PennedPossibilities 254 — How do you use social media as an author?

Frequent "buy my book" - is annoying and I am good at not spending time looking at that

Ridiculous hype, unhelpful quotes "eighth book in the VoidLords series", bad covers don't help.

I value people who subscribe to my free newsletter and offer discounts/special offers to them.

31/1: Would you ever cosplay one of your characters? Which one?
I’m not into cosplay, perhaps because I live it all more vividly in my head anyway. But anyone who would like to cosplay my characters is more than welcome. Send me the photos!

31/1. Where do you write?
Mostly at home, with a laptop on my, er, lap. But I have written very successfully in coffee shops and on trains. It’s one of the reasons train travel is so much more civilised than driving.

29/1: Did you write stories when you were a kid?
Oh yes. I can’t really remember a time when I didn’t. The first thing I remember was when I was 7 or 8 and I wrote about a boy named Ajax who lived on a space station. Homage to the Kemlo stories of E C Elliott, long before I’d heard the term ‘fan-fiction’.

29/1. Describe the saddest moment you've written. Share an excerpt.
The end of , where Jerya and Rodal say their goodbyes, with no real expectation of ever meeting again, is pretty poignant.

28/1. How do you format a flashback so the reader knows what's going on?
I don't really do flashbacks as such. If a character's remembering something I'll say that's what they're doing.

28/1: On a scale of 1—10, how hot is your antagonist? Why?
I'm afraid I find this question vaguely distasteful, and I think that's because Perriad would be utterly appalled by it. She may be an antagonist, and pretty mean to Jerya, but I think to be considered as an object of sexual desire would be revolting for her. Cruel and unusual punishment.

27/1: Is your MC part of a religion?
This is approaching the crux of . Jerya grew up with the implicit belief that Dawnsingers had some kind of power over the sun. What she does when she finds out this is not true is central to the story. The theme will recur in other books in the series.

27/1. Hollywood is filming one of your works? Which actors are playing the main roles?
I have no idea. I’m just not sufficiently familiar with young Hollywood actors.

26/1: Would you co-write a book?
I have done, in non-fiction. The 2nd edition of my Outdoor Photography book was co-authored with Chiz Dakin because her areas of expertise in the outdoors complemented my own. And my most recent guidebook, to Off-Road Cycling in the Lake District, was really a co-production with my partner, but she's too modest to want her name on the cover.

25/1: What's the least likely relationship between characters in your WIP?
Obviously if Jerya and Perriad suddenly fell on each other declaring undying love, but that’s never going to happen…
There’s one in Book 4 that might qualify, between a girl from a gentry background and a slave, but that isn’t out till August and details are still subject to change.

25/1. Writing outside your gender/sexuality/race etc?
I do this a lot, especially in terms of writing female characters. I started intending that Jerya and Rodal would be equally prominent, but she claimed more of the limelight, and she’s the backbone character of the whole series. It’s her doing, not mine.
Some time soon I aim to do a Substack post going into this in more depth.

23/1: If your book was a movie, what would it be rated and why?
It would depend how the director handled the sex scenes. It isn't possible to leave them out entirely—but there's really only one that matters (F/F) in . No need to be too explicit. I guess it would be PG on the UK rating system but I wish it could be U.

#WritersCoffeeClub 23/1. Who do you publish through? How's it going?
I've done 60 non-fiction books with ten different trad publishers. Nine of them I'd work with again.
For my novels I've self-published through IngramSpark.

#WritersCoffeeClub 22/1. Have you ever used storyboarding?
Not in fiction, and I have no intention of using any other plotting or outlining tools either.
I've done all sorts of planning for non-fiction books, some mapped out page by page, which is pretty much like storyboarding. I can’t do it in fiction and no longer have any inclination even to try.

22/1: Have you ever scrapped a written character? Why?
I haven’t scrapped a character as such, not within an otherwise complete MS, but I have several entire books that have been, if not entirely scrapped, certainly shoved away in the darkest, dustiest, corners of the attic.

JonSparks, to writing
@JonSparks@writing.exchange avatar

20/1. Do you have a blog?
I actually have two.
One I started years ago to publicise my book on Arthur Ransome and the Lake District. It's now somewhat dormant but there's still some solid content there: https://ransomeslakedistrict.com/
Now there's a blog on my fiction-author website too, with thoughts about reading and writing: https://www.jonsparksauthor.com/blog

19/1: If your SC were a parent, would they be a good one? Why/why not?
You know this is a major plot point in Book 2, don't you? To find out how Railu's relationship with her son develops, check out Book 3, 'Vows and Watersheds', coming on the 8th of next month. And there's more in Book 4, to follow six months later.

#WritersCoffeeClub 18/1. On BookTok?
No. I’m suspicious of the security and other concerns. I left Twitter after Musk took over and don’t want to stumble into another toxic space. Besides, I really have no idea how I’d use the medium to promote my books. My experience of video tells me it takes a disproportionately long time to produce anything decent. Time I need for writing and the rest of my life.
