#PennedPossibilities 254 — How do you use social media as an author?

Frequent "buy my book" - is annoying and I am good at not spending time looking at that

Ridiculous hype, unhelpful quotes "eighth book in the VoidLords series", bad covers don't help.

I value people who subscribe to my free newsletter and offer discounts/special offers to them.

10/1. Have you ever given a talk about your work?
I have done this with several of my non-fiction books. For instance I spoke about 'Swallows, Amazons and Adventure' at Kendal Mountain Festival a few years ago and I'll be returning to this topic for the Arthur Ransome Society's Literary Weekend in April. I've also blogged about Ransome's influence on me: https://www.jonsparksauthor.com/post/swallows-amazons-and-shattered-moons.

As I write my next book about my experience of having worked 17 years in retail and the PTSD effects from it, I'm shocked to see the number of people online who describe the exact same weekly nightmare I have that I open the book with.

It tells me this is a more wide spread concern.

4. Have you ever seen a movie which was better than the book?
I’ve seen plenty which were worse! Lynch’s ‘Dune’ tops that list. Or bottoms it, perhaps.
Better? If not better, ‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’ came close. A great example of how to make a great film from a great, but supposedly ‘unfilmable’ book.

10/9. What are your thoughts on em dashes?
Probably third on my list, after semi-colons and ellipses, but I like them, especially in dialogue. All these things help to get closer to the really rhythms of speech. But I groan when writers use em-dashes instead of inverted commas to denote direct speech. That’s just the ‘I’m doing this differently so I must be cleverer than you’ fallacy.

Deep philosophical questions - do people sharing stuff they want to sell get any traction here? Books, or newsletter subscriptions, or workshops?

I get mixed messages as a novelist ie a small creator.

31/1: Would you ever cosplay one of your characters? Which one?
I’m not into cosplay, perhaps because I live it all more vividly in my head anyway. But anyone who would like to cosplay my characters is more than welcome. Send me the photos!

27/1. Hollywood is filming one of your works? Which actors are playing the main roles?
I have no idea. I’m just not sufficiently familiar with young Hollywood actors.

#PennedPossibilities 254 — How do you use social media as an author?

On X, Bluesky, Masto, FB, I have a newsletter and a website-blog (which needs remodelling).

I sometimes offer paid services on them, it has rarely been harder to work as an author and if this offends, unfollow me please. I offer some advice and support free.

I offer paid support for authors, manuscript assessment and media/confidence skills,

28/1. How do you format a flashback so the reader knows what's going on?
I don't really do flashbacks as such. If a character's remembering something I'll say that's what they're doing.

29/1: Did you write stories when you were a kid?
Oh yes. I can’t really remember a time when I didn’t. The first thing I remember was when I was 7 or 8 and I wrote about a boy named Ajax who lived on a space station. Homage to the Kemlo stories of E C Elliott, long before I’d heard the term ‘fan-fiction’.

31/1. Where do you write?
Mostly at home, with a laptop on my, er, lap. But I have written very successfully in coffee shops and on trains. It’s one of the reasons train travel is so much more civilised than driving.

I've been rewriting it again, but this first page still has some issues.
The question is would you keep reading? ☺️

27/1: Is your MC part of a religion?
This is approaching the crux of . Jerya grew up with the implicit belief that Dawnsingers had some kind of power over the sun. What she does when she finds out this is not true is central to the story. The theme will recur in other books in the series.

29/1. Describe the saddest moment you've written. Share an excerpt.
The end of , where Jerya and Rodal say their goodbyes, with no real expectation of ever meeting again, is pretty poignant.

28/1: On a scale of 1—10, how hot is your antagonist? Why?
I'm afraid I find this question vaguely distasteful, and I think that's because Perriad would be utterly appalled by it. She may be an antagonist, and pretty mean to Jerya, but I think to be considered as an object of sexual desire would be revolting for her. Cruel and unusual punishment.

26/1: Would you co-write a book?
I have done, in non-fiction. The 2nd edition of my Outdoor Photography book was co-authored with Chiz Dakin because her areas of expertise in the outdoors complemented my own. And my most recent guidebook, to Off-Road Cycling in the Lake District, was really a co-production with my partner, but she's too modest to want her name on the cover.
