I ended my time on Duolingo in the #NewYear, after finding out they sacked a bunch of translators and are now relying on AI to generate sentences for learning. Essentially, they are just generating the content via AI and having a limited number of translators "check the work" before putting it up into their programs.
I also noticed that, the longer I went on in my Duolingo program, the quality of the learning seemed to decrease dramatically, and after learning about the AI thing, it started to dawn on me that this could be part of the reason for that. But even if it isn't related, the fact that they are making this move toward AI only means in the future, the learning WILL decrease in quality whether we like it or not, and that's no fun at all.
So No Thanks, #Duolingo. So long, and thanks for all the fish.
@graylynn people give too much credit to machine learning algorithms.
It's moderately good at one thing: learning patterns to either identify them or replicate them. AI can't and likely won't be able to do the same level of translation (and art, writing, coding, etc) as a human. Maybe an AGI could do the job, but we're pretty far from that, and needs technological achievements, that are not even within the theoretical segments of science.
@graylynn The biggest roadblock in front of AGI is physics. Simulating a human brain would require so much computing power, memory, etc., that not only our current computers don't have the power for it, but very likely also the future ones.
This is the face of a pup who’s not going to let some arbitrary calendar date change the way she lives her best pup life. (But she has suggested that I make a #NewYearsResolution for more scritches and more walks)
Something I used to do on my socials in the past was post a little morning post about how thankful I am for anything I thought of that morning. I am going to start doing that again using the hashtag #ImThankful in case you want to mute / it's not your thing.
Today, let's start out by saying I am thankful that the Lord has entrusted me with my four wonderful children and my wife. I am lucky to have all of them in my life and love them all so much.
@mdmrn Morning good sir! Looking forward to your thankful posts! I too am thankful for my children and wife. As the Bible says, the children are a gift from God and my wife is a true compliment. I am not sure what I would do with my wife.
