I got completely sucked in by this Netflix doc series following a Stanford experiment on twins and diet.
I was already sold by Michael Pollan via a previous Netflix doc on the mantra of “Eat real food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” But perhaps this new show offers a new nudge towards healthy eating.
"A scientific squabble over how to define self-control draws from an unlikely source: A story from Greek mythology."
If you're working on your New Year's resolutions, Science News has an interesting article: "Most people say self-control is the same as willpower. Researchers disagree."
My new years resolution is to finally #degoogle my life.
I've already replaced a lot of Google products. Some are trickier to extricate myself from (e.g. I've had the same Gmail address for nearly 20 years). Others I just use out of inertia.
There are very few that I'm genuinely struggling to replace. Like Scholar Alerts for finding out about new papers - what can I use instead of that? I know about Semantic Scholar.
New external hard drive backup. Made a second backup of everything I have.
Downloaded all the archives and data online, all my local and network files. 45 years of images, photos, videos, incl ones I transferred from physical to digital. Documents, writings, going back decades.
I have a working backup and now a backup drive that will go into the out-of-home safety deposit box that'll we will pull out occasionally to update. #NewYearsResolution
Many people make New Year's resolutions about exercise, but which form of activity is best?
When it comes to physical activity, every bit counts, according to a report in Science News. "There’s no such thing as 'the best exercise.' Rather lots of things — big and small — can help."
As mentioned, you might be wondering, what are my goals for 2024?
My main goals are to well, improve my reading speed and also my listening comprehension skills. I noticed how lacking my listening skills are when it comes to the listening section on the JLPT. Maybe more Seiyuu programs and JDrama with only Japanese subtitles can do the trick in fixing that. Also reinforcing stuff by creating content in Japanese.
Also, I need to read a lot faster, and maybe start reading longer text besides just Manga as the JLPT had long passages I’m not used to. I probably should pick up some light novels and read news only in Japanese.
I plan to take the JLPT N2 again this December, but the results from the first attempt should give me an idea what I need to work on. Once N2 is done, N1 will be my next goal.
Of course, improve engagement on my Anime blog as well.
In short, it’s more of doing more immersion and output now the foundations (kanji, some vocabulary, and Kanji) is solid.
Other strech goals, which depends: Going to an Anime Convention or traveling to Japan.
If your #NewYearsResolution is to listen to more #podcasts (what... that seems like a totally real resolution... 😂 ) and you're into:
🔭 astronomy
📚 mythology
or, you know, random other stuff (e.g., cows, obscure/not obscure sci-fi and fantasy tv shows, etc), maybe give our show a listen!
My NY resolution is to declutter & organize our storage area. This is the "before" picture - maybe it doesn't look too cluttery but it's at the point where it's hard to find things so I want to take care of it. #NewYearsResolution#Declutter
I'm going to try to find the black musicians behind the popular white music I listen to. When I'm in the mood for SRV, I'm going to turn on Albert King. When I'm in the mood for Led Zeppelin, I'm going to find who they "nicked" (in their own words) the song from and listen to them.
This is the face of a pup who’s not going to let some arbitrary calendar date change the way she lives her best pup life. (But she has suggested that I make a #NewYearsResolution for more scritches and more walks)
My resolution last year was to stretch whenever my cat stretched. I may have missed a few, but regret nothing. I'm doing it again this year. #NewYearsResolution#CatsOfMastodon
Mastodon is become more a brand than a software. If one searches 'mastodon' one gets a bunch articles that pretty much treat M'don as a brand with scant lip service to Fediverse, and links to a couple of the biggest M'don instances that happen to be melding with Threats.
If a #NewYearsResolution is your thing, set out to say and write 'fediverse' — proudly and deliberately.
