#askfedi Hi, I haven't followed the progress for a while, which OSes are currently usable on #pinephone (basic call/SMS, terminal, GPS, not crashing too much)? Is #waydroid usable (in particular for #OSMAnd)? Thanks!
I'm still desperate for a map app without a two finger rotation gesture. Please, I need any where I can disable this gesture. It's hard to be precise when it's -20 degrees and my hands are shaking.
Why was this added even? Why would I not want North to be up? Sure tho, it can exist, but let me disable it goddamnit.
When editing #OpenStreetMap on the go, @everydoor is my hands-down favorite, but I'd hesitate recommending it for more new mappers.
I've been playing with #OsmGo just now, and really like how easy it is, maybe even for new contributors.
Plus, it's a progressive web app that runs in a browser, or installable in your device: https://osmgo.com , so this also seems to be a great candidate tool to introduce as a friendly editor for @openstreetmap mapping parties for new users.
@MapAmore
I use @openstreetmap a lot, via #OSMAnd+, and I'd love to give back to the map commons. The biggest problems I see are not with the basic data (streets etc), since the NZ govt's own map data is released under CC license, and updates to it are quickly imported into #OSM.
Rather what I see is outdated info about what can be found at a given address. Any advice of helping to update that kind of data? Is it part of OSM or other data commons used by OSMAnd+?

In 2024, the variety and quality of open source Android apps is greater than ever - thanks to the development teams and to #fdroid app store.
Is there a resource where you can upload, share and discover hiking routes in somewhat like wikipedia-style?
I am using Komoot app currently. It is good, but i don't feel like investing my own time and data to a closed paid platform with no ability to export and share the content freely.
@clacke@bookwar One of the reasons I like using #OpenStreetMap instead of proprietary maps is that I (and other people) can add trails that are missing and correct trails that are wrong. So it ends up showing a lot more trails, more accurately, than something like Google maps.
There are several phone apps based on OSM. I use #OsmAnd but I don't use it for editing the map (though you can); I record my track and then make my changes when I get back to my computer.
Desert Atlas is a new app for your mapping needs. Search and bookmark. Plan trips with friends. When you're done, export your bookmarks to #OrganicMaps or #OsmAnd for navigation.
And, it's fully self-hosted: even the base map is stored in your grain.
Almost exactly 5 years ago I uploaded the first image on wikimedia to be shown in OsmAnd App. It's interesting to see pictures in a map. I didn't think the images would be of interest to others. Out of almost 400 images, 200+ are in OSM, 24 in Wikidata. 5 images in Wikivoyage. 21 in Wikipedia DE, 12 in Wikipedia JA, 14 in other Wikipedias. Thanks everyone who categorised better my pictures and quickly corrected my typos.
@heiglandreas@ocramius@organicmaps I remember using it few years back (6+ I guess), but the main routing system was limited and the whole app quite slow.
OrganicMaps style is not that bad, but will gibe another try #osmand, thanks for the reminder :)

I've been using @organicmaps instead of #OSMand for a while now, and I like it! Still have OSMand on my phone for advanced features, but I like the simplicity of #OrganicMaps for navigation. Biggest plus: Search just works.
I wonder, has anyone got any ideas on how to increase the accuracy of Google Maps when using it to get walking directions to somewhere? almost every time I use it, it tells me to turn too soon at an intersection, when I'm still almost twenty feet or so from said intersection, and it sometimes tells me I've arrived at a destination before I've actually arrived. I've learned to compensate, but it'd be nice if it'd tell me to turn when I'm actually at the corner rather than before, and that I've arrived at a destination when I'm actually ready to turn into the doorway, rather than it doing it in such a way that I have to shoreline with my cane for ten or so feet.
What is the use of it?
When hiking, i can see whether the diversion to the next vending machine at the farm is worthwhile, or i don't have the appropriate coins with me. Of course this applies also to parking tickets machine and public toilets.
