En route to #Geneva to attend a #PhD jury at the Geneva #observatory, which is located near the French border outside Geneva.
Instead of renting a #car, as I used to do in the past, this time I’m renting… a bike to go from the station to my #hotel (about 16km away) and the diary to the observatory.
Tempting: a #Stockholm-#Milan route involving a #TGV9211. #ICE71 punctuality stands at 52 % though... (Not sure why DB refuses to sell #EC323 available from Trenitalia.)
How do you all manage to travel on European Sleeper or Nightjet? Every time I try to book a ticket it's at least 200€ one way. Where's the catch? #NightTrains
@mario The catch is that I accept I have to book months in advance and spend three times as much as I would by flying, and as a result I travel far less. 😬
However, the last night trains I took (Stockholm-Berlin and Berlin-Bruxelles) were only ~70 € one way each (6-berths compartments).
The #EuropeanSleeper was uneventful. The #SJ#NightTrain from Berlin was fun: I made a new friend, joined the birthday party of our 3 yo compartment mate, had long chats with the train manager who used to be a #FOSDEM regular 10 years ago.
Apparently #RDC / #BTE has some good things coming soon, in time for the summer season. Newly renovated wagons and whatnot.
I've just computed that if you want to #offset ONE #travel by #plane#Paris to #Rio (about 2880 tCO2, according to @labos1point5), by not sending #email (without attachment), I need to completely stop sending emails for the next ...
272 YEARS !
assuming an average of 10 mails per day, each working #day. The #carbon#footprint of an email is considered to be 4g CO2eq.
I got my #37C3 ticket but it's so hard to #StayGrounded in this season. The SJ #NightTrain is full in one direction and only 240 € beds are available in the other...
I just compensated my Brussels #IAPP#DPC23 trip's carbon emissions by buying #SAF (sustainable aviation fuel) into #Finnair's system.
The price was 230 eur. Yes, that's a lot for an individual given the rock-bottom subsidised fares we enjoy now, but at the same time, if the value one gets from a flight couldn't take that hit - maybe the flight is not worth taking?
This sort of additional cost ought to be regulated into ticket prices all across the EU, immediately.
"Instead of paying human moderators or otherwise not growing too-big-to-moderate, social media companies use imperfect automated tools to remove enough of the Nazi stuff so as to not to give off “Nazi site” vibes while hoping users will put up with least some Nazis. They are hoping that you will sit at their table and tolerate some Nazis."
#Today, I am celebrating my 4 years without flying ✈️.
The #Earth’s #climate is perturbed by #human activites. One of the easiest things to do towards #sustainability is to cut air travels. Thus, 4 years ago, I cut my frequent flyer cards and decided to #StayGrounded, using only low-#carbon travel means such as #train.
The things you miss when you take the plane to travel from Cologne to Helsinki, instead of using train and ferry:
– Copenhagen, Malmö and Stockholm
– Breathtaking views of Northern Europe
– Incredibly delicious food and super friendly staff onboard the swedish high speed train
– Sleeping onboard a ship while crossing the baltic sea
– Europe‘s longest railway bridge
I am missing the emptiness of the airports from the Covid period. It felt as if people understood the world is burning and they were acting on it. #StayGrounded
#nlk23✈️
I wrote about our plans for a #summer#vacation to #Greece without airtravel a while ago. I'd said I wanted to put my money and effort where my mouth is.
Now I wanted to add a follow-up, but the original post is already gone. My fault for setting auto-deletion to 3 months.
Two adults and two children travelled from #Vienna 🇦🇹 to #Corfu 🇬🇷 and back via #Italy 🇮🇹 , with some sightseeing in #Ancona, Corfu Town, #Brindisi, and #Rome without using any cars or airplanes. I had bought additional travel insurance for missed connections, but we didn't need that.
Itinerary: Tram, #Nightjet sleeper, bus, #ferry, bus, bus, (hotel stay with occasional outings by bus), bus, bus, ferry, shuttle bus, bus, (hotel), #Frecciargento train, (hotel, metro and bus for #sightseeing), #Frecciarossa train, Nightjet sleeper, metro. (Busses means regular public transit busses on numbered lines that the locals also take.)
Every single vehicle everywhere had working air condition. They were clean and on time, and all the longer trips had tasty food. There's power outlets everywhere. The Frecciarossa (red arrow) between Rome and #Bologna only got to 250 km/h, not the 300 we were hoping to see, but that was the only slightest disappointment.
The ferries are not at all climate-friendly. I have not found a number for how much #CO² for a crossing, but they are similar to cruise ships. The trips are far shorter than cruises of course, but we see and smell the black smoke from the stacks. It's wrong to feel smug about taking a ferry instead of an airplane. All the busses had #combustion engines. All the trains/metros/trams were #electric, so that depends on the grid. The Austrian ÖBB prides itself on using only "green" #electricity.
We enjoyed the trip very much. I am unsure about any future travel. I would totally do this again in terms of comfort and experiences. But my goals for how much I hope to not pollute and damage the world for my pleasure have changed. I have no answers right now.
@carorackete
