I still have ArchLinux installed but it's been almost a month since I also started to daily drive OpenSUSE Tumbleweed and… It's really nice? It's a really cool rolling release and I'm definitely enjoying it :blob_cat:
The only thing that saddened me in the first place is the lack of real "AUR" equivalent but since I recently discovered Distrobox it's not a matter anymore I can just install whatever the hell I want from any (supported) distro, so… What's the problem then? (And it's not like Flatpak wasn't a thing either)
@breadly at some point in the future, I really want to use an immutable distro like #VanillaOs or #MicroOs and use distro box to access everything I want or need if it's not a flatpak :3
Is there any good Blog post to learn #uBlue customization with relatively limited knowledge about #Docker? I don't like the idea of a distro that I can't customize easily so normal #Silverblue doesn't sound like my favorite choice but uBlue, #VanillaOS and similar approaches sound very tempting and I love the concept of #Atomic distros in general! Also, do you think it's easy enough to learn to imediately switch my main computer over or should I do some more testing in VMs first?
I love immutable #Linux distros so much. Stuff Like #Fedora Silverblue or #VanillaOS are some of my favorite distros out there. I can't wait until #postmarketOS finally makes the shift. That would take my favorite distro and just make it even better!
We're hosting a panel discussion on the future of the Linux desktop with many parties in the ecosystem. What questions or topics do you think would be valuable for the community to discuss?
Please let us know in the replies and boost for visibility!
Hey Fedi! We're hosting a panel at SCALE 21x with some of the major players in the Linux desktop ecosystem to discuss where we go from here, any big ideas you want us to discuss?
I need a recommendation.
I am officially getting my grandma a Linux Laptop, as she inadvertently damaged her MacBook Air (those things just do NOT like tea!!)
My budget is just shy of 1,000 USD, and I'd ideally like to stay within half of that.
I'd also like to keep something about as light as the MBA, and not smaller than a 13.3" screen.
I was thinking of getting a used (probably five year old) Thinkpad X1 Carbon, but I'm not sure how rugged they are compared to the old fashioned Thinkpads.
My other thought was one of the more affordable #Slimbook options, but I'm worried about shipping time/cost and support all the way from Spain. (Although, of course, I don't expect any support for a 5-year-old used Lenovo. XD
I'm also considering #VanillaOS as the distro, because I want something as safe and basic as possible. My grandma is 103. Yeah. 103.
Just wow.... No partition table with their ISO and not one sees a problem with it not being bootale for most people. -For the past year. 🤯 🙄
Etcher, Fedora writer, and not even Rufu from Windows cannot write this. But that is "OK" because supposedly "gnome writer" may. 🙄 -- I didn't even know Gnome made a writer.
The user test base for Vanilla Os has been so small, I would call it a niche.
I have been waiting (and waiting) for Vanilla OS 2, for almost a year now.
The whole time I could have been using their Ubuntu spin, which I tried, and liked, but put off because I bought in the whole hype sold to us about v2 "coming soon."
Narrator voice: "It did not come soon."
Worse, their development, seems to not only been delayed, but progress actually got worse, not better. I've alpha tested before, and this "alpha" seems less like an alpha and more of a dev draft (pre-alpha).
I'm hesitating to release OS/1337 because I want it to actually work reliably and be feature-complete at the basics before I'd consider it worth releasing. https://github.com/OS-1337/OS1337
But apparently testing shit is overrated for them...
Sorry if I am being blunt, but you know I am very into contributing rather than creating from scratch… on this topic, here is a very nice article by the developer of #VanillaOS.
@rufovillosum@alf@solidtrax Should I not transition to #vanillaos#orchid I would definitely try #arch next since I already have a bit of experience by running #manjaro for a couple of years on all of my computers and would like the experience to learn even more about its internals. Plus, I love to work with the #archwiki!
I am actually tired of distro hopping. I just cannot find a distro that I want to stick with. 😅
I want a distro that is fairly current, but stable. I would prefer to rely on the terminal less. It would be great if it was an immutable OS with automatic updates, but I would want atomic / transactional updates too, so I could install some limited packages (Drivers, VPN).
Virtualization support is important. I work from home and inside a virtual machine (virtual box, for simplicity).
The previous build (76) you couldn't do anything with it. It booted, you could log in, move your mouse around, but that was it. You could click anywhere and nothing would happen. Even keyboard shortcuts did not work. You had to physically power off.
I'm curious if they've made progress with the latest build.
If you want to try it, I wouldn't suggest real hardware. Stick to a VM for now.
I have been using #manjaro#gnome for years and am quite happy with it. I removed all branding related packages to achieve a vanilla GNOME experience. I want to try something new soon. Should I go with #vanillaos 2 or #arch? #distro#linux
I'm a little disappointed, but only because of all the effort it took to boot their ISO.
1st you need to sign up to GitHub (or sing in). 2nd you need to wait a long time to download it, because GitHub is not the greatest for larger files (it really is not). 3rd burning the ISO is not the answer, because oddly Etcher and Rufus will inform you it is not a bootable ISO (I redownload just to confirm and checked the hash)
4th, you need to burn a Ventory USB. I don't know why that works as opposed to burning it directly, but it does.
That said, I knew it was an Alpha, but it only boots.
The Live CD starts Gnome, which you cannot use. Moving your mouse to the hot corners will do nothing. No keyboard shortcuts either. I can right click and get into settings and that is all I can do. The 1 window that pops up is the installer and it crashes immediately. That's it.
