I still have ArchLinux installed but it's been almost a month since I also started to daily drive OpenSUSE Tumbleweed and… It's really nice? It's a really cool rolling release and I'm definitely enjoying it :blob_cat:
The only thing that saddened me in the first place is the lack of real "AUR" equivalent but since I recently discovered Distrobox it's not a matter anymore I can just install whatever the hell I want from any (supported) distro, so… What's the problem then? (And it's not like Flatpak wasn't a thing either)

@breadly at some point in the future, I really want to use an immutable distro like or and use distro box to access everything I want or need if it's not a flatpak :3

Is there any good Blog post to learn #uBlue customization with relatively limited knowledge about #Docker? I don't like the idea of a distro that I can't customize easily so normal #Silverblue doesn't sound like my favorite choice but uBlue, #VanillaOS and similar approaches sound very tempting and I love the concept of #Atomic distros in general! Also, do you think it's easy enough to learn to imediately switch my main computer over or should I do some more testing in VMs first?

I love immutable distros so much. Stuff Like Silverblue or are some of my favorite distros out there. I can't wait until finally makes the shift. That would take my favorite distro and just make it even better!

Ok ,

I need a recommendation.
I am officially getting my grandma a Linux Laptop, as she inadvertently damaged her MacBook Air (those things just do NOT like tea!!)

My budget is just shy of 1,000 USD, and I'd ideally like to stay within half of that.

I'd also like to keep something about as light as the MBA, and not smaller than a 13.3" screen.

I was thinking of getting a used (probably five year old) Thinkpad X1 Carbon, but I'm not sure how rugged they are compared to the old fashioned Thinkpads.

My other thought was one of the more affordable options, but I'm worried about shipping time/cost and support all the way from Spain. (Although, of course, I don't expect any support for a 5-year-old used Lenovo. XD

I'm also considering as the distro, because I want something as safe and basic as possible. My grandma is 103. Yeah. 103.

I do not understand why any Linux distro would strip the partition table from their ISO?

Anyone?

Just wow.... No partition table with their ISO and not one sees a problem with it not being bootale for most people. -For the past year. 🤯 🙄

Etcher, Fedora writer, and not even Rufu from Windows cannot write this. But that is "OK" because supposedly "gnome writer" may. 🙄 -- I didn't even know Gnome made a writer.

The user test base for Vanilla Os has been so small, I would call it a niche.

Trying to install Fedora SilverBlue on a Dell Precision T3610 because it is working fine on the T3600 in the other room.

The problem is upon booting the USB so I can install it, the HP 2011x monitor keeps going to sleep. Which means I cannot see the installer.

If this wasn't my home, I would tunnel through, but this one is in the other room on WiFi only.

Linux_Is_Best,

I made some progress with Vanilla OS (their Ubuntu flavor) with the Dell Precision T3610.

I had to select to boot using the safe video drivers and for the 1st time the screen didn't cut out.

The issue seems now that it reads that it failed to start "Samba NMB Daemon" -- I seem to be stuck here.

I have been waiting (and waiting) for Vanilla OS 2, for almost a year now.

The whole time I could have been using their Ubuntu spin, which I tried, and liked, but put off because I bought in the whole hype sold to us about v2 "coming soon."

Narrator voice: "It did not come soon."

Worse, their development, seems to not only been delayed, but progress actually got worse, not better. I've alpha tested before, and this "alpha" seems less like an alpha and more of a dev draft (pre-alpha).

@Linux_Is_Best JFC!

I'm hesitating to release OS/1337 because I want it to actually work reliably and be feature-complete at the basics before I'd consider it worth releasing.

But apparently testing shit is overrated for them...

Vanilla OS 2 -- Alpha build 80 -- Has been released.

Sadly, this build has the same issue as previous builds. After install, you cannot boot. Some people report a successful boot if you use legacy boot.

But as it stands, EFI/UEFI and even a Virtual Machine, fails.

The odd thing is Vanilla OS 2's Alpha page (webpage) will not load with uBlock and Privacy Badger.

I am actually tired of distro hopping. I just cannot find a distro that I want to stick with. 😅

I want a distro that is fairly current, but stable. I would prefer to rely on the terminal less. It would be great if it was an immutable OS with automatic updates, but I would want atomic / transactional updates too, so I could install some limited packages (Drivers, VPN).

Virtualization support is important. I work from home and inside a virtual machine (virtual box, for simplicity).

Linux_Is_Best,
@Linux_Is_Best@mastodon.social avatar

@abhijit

I have. I like it. It likely will be my future distro.

But they are retiring their Ubuntu flavor for Debian flavor which is currently an alpha build (in my opinion, it is pre-alpha).

I don't want to jump onto a distro that's currently in a transitional phase. Once their newer distro comes out, I will likely jump right on it.

Linux_Is_Best, to random

Vanilla OS 2 has a new alpha build -- Build 77.

Time to load this one up in a virtual machine.

The previous build (76) you couldn't do anything with it. It booted, you could log in, move your mouse around, but that was it. You could click anywhere and nothing would happen. Even keyboard shortcuts did not work. You had to physically power off.

I'm curious if they've made progress with the latest build.

If you want to try it, I wouldn't suggest real hardware. Stick to a VM for now.

Linux_Is_Best,
@Linux_Is_Best@mastodon.social avatar

Vanilla OS 2 still does not yet seem like an Alpha Build. Pre-alpha, yes, but I've used alpha software many times before, and this isn't it.

In a VM (virtual machine), the LIVE CD during install is using up more resources than macOS or Windows 11 did.

I provided my VM with 16 GB or Ram, 6 thread cores, enabled 3D graphics, and it's still using up most of it.

The installer, failed. Although that is still an improvement, since this build at least started the installer.

I have been using for years and am quite happy with it. I removed all branding related packages to achieve a vanilla GNOME experience. I want to try something new soon. Should I go with 2 or ?

I finally got to try Vanilla OS 2

I'm a little disappointed, but only because of all the effort it took to boot their ISO.

1st you need to sign up to GitHub (or sing in). 2nd you need to wait a long time to download it, because GitHub is not the greatest for larger files (it really is not). 3rd burning the ISO is not the answer, because oddly Etcher and Rufus will inform you it is not a bootable ISO (I redownload just to confirm and checked the hash)

4th, you need to burn a Ventory USB. I don't know why that works as opposed to burning it directly, but it does.

That said, I knew it was an Alpha, but it only boots.

The Live CD starts Gnome, which you cannot use. Moving your mouse to the hot corners will do nothing. No keyboard shortcuts either. I can right click and get into settings and that is all I can do. The 1 window that pops up is the installer and it crashes immediately. That's it.

Nice wallpaper 😂
