Cyberus Technology (my employer) just released a KVM backend allows VirtualBox to run virtual machines utilising the Linux KVM hypervisor instead of the custom kernel module used by standard VirtualBox. Check out our blog post about this: https://cyberus-technology.de/articles/vbox-kvm-public-release/?utm_source=fediverse&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=blog #virtualbox #kvm #linux

CI jobs for my ansible playbook have been broken for months due to some changes with GitHub Actions.
This took me down a rabbit hole to fix...

Long story short: Self-Hosted GitHub Actions runner, running on Proxmox with nested virtualization to run molecule tests using Vagrant against VirtualBox VMs. 🙃

I really did squash a lot of issues in OS/1337:
https://github.com/orgs/OS-1337/projects/1

Good news: Network Support is in it.
Status: Still within #1440kB size for the #Core Edition.
Bad News: PCI(e) stack had to be yeeted in order to fit, so no #Networking in #VirtualBox

I'll now have to get my workflow to follow the pipeline that @SweetAIBelle has been builing...

Need some help! Okay, I’m running an Ubuntu 22.04 LTS VM via VirtualBox. After I login though, if I don’t do anything for a while, it takes me back to the login prompt. Is there a way to remove/extend the timeout?

After many years of using Oracle (due to being able to use it for commercial purposes for free), I just installed and tried out Player 17. Jesus christ is it fast! Booted stock Ubuntu 23.10 in about 11 seconds. Virtualbox was an absolute dog. That's it - I'm converting my virtualbox images over - hope that's possible.

I guess I fecked up on this build of OS/1337...

need to repackage rootfs.cpio.xz and see if that works....

kkarhan,

@SweetAIBelle in theory that initramfs and kernel files should boot on qemu out of the box as @landley would've intended for #Toybox / #Linux to do.

I only tested on #VirtualBox out of lazyness and convenience.

The Flopply-Fill - Script should basically shove those files over.

I merely replaced rootfs.cpio.xz with the new file and booted that up to this point, but if you're pedantic you could literally rebuilt the entire floppy image.

@SweetAIBelle @landley

Also regardless if , or whatever may it be [, , or god forbid / ] in all cases it should just work.

After all we ain't playing 2016 DOOM on it, we just want an 80x25 terminal to work...

#FollowerPower: Anyone with #Linux - #boot|ing #KnowHow able and willing to take a look why my current build of OS/1337 doesn't boot?

It's a 1440kB 3,5" #Floppy image and should work just fine in #VirtualBox / #QEMU / #KVM / #vmware but it's stuck after loading #Linux (bzImage) and the remaining files (rootfs.cpio.xz)...

It uses #syslinux as #bootloader so any hints are appreciated.

Today's $dayjob shenanigans. Building from scratch as a VM for sandbox testing DHCP PXE boot settings, then re-compiling to run on a BT Hub 5a for deployment in a lab.

Not very retro at all, but we all have to have a break sometime. 😊

I just installed VirtualBox on Windows for "reasons" and the installation process feels like I've been transported back to the 90s. So much more cumbersome than pkg install virtualbox-ose on .

Another complaint - it looks like default VM settings (at least for ) have not been revisited in some time. 2GB RAM and 20GB of disk (as it uses for Linux distros) feels like a more reasonable default. And claiming that EFI is for "special OSes only" seems like something that made sense in 2013, not 2023.
