Confession of an Amiga enthusiast back in the day: I always liked the black and white hires mode of the Atari ST, which to me looked slicker than even the original Macintosh. And I still love that "printed page" experience of environments like Medley Interlisp.
For all you #atarist#retrocomputing nerds: I've been sitting on a Falcon030 for years that I haven't been able to power up since living in Iceland, as I'm too lazy to get a step-up converter. If you wanted a modern switching power supply able to handle any mains voltage, this is a good drop-in replacement:
I was BBSing last night on the Atari 520ST. It's not one of my main go-tos for that kind of thing, but it's nice to login on the ST once in a while.
The ST has an interesting terminal program called TAZ that achieves 16 colors for ANSI emulation in its 4-color medium resolution mode (640x200) by way of a trick. Palettes are swapped in an out in alternating frames, so you get effectively a 30Hz, 16-color display by way of what one might call "temporal dithering." (And, yes -- the flickering is quite noticeable.)
When the ST was my main driver long ago, I bought this paint program called Quantum Paint that achieved 4096 colors onscreen thanks to a similar technique. It wasn't the best experience, I confess.
One of my favourite pieces of box artwork - and favourite games. UTOPIA: THE CREATION OF A NATION.
It's so rich with cool scifi detail, and I remember vividly adding it to my birthday or Christmas gift list the moment I saw this on the shelves of my local Beatties or Electronics Boutique in 1993/4. I was not disappointed and this and K-240 gobbled up so much of my time - and still does from time to time.
Some Halloween in the past I wrote an Atari GFA BASIC program to randomly place the sprites from EPYX's Rogue on the screen whilst playing a YM music version of Michael Jackson's Thriller. I'm not sure where the finished version is, but I just located an earlier revision before I added the music. #AtariST
Anyone have experience reading stuff off 25 to 35 year old #AtariST floppy disks?
There's some 68k assembly and programs I made that I'd love to see again.
Said floppy disks have been on an alternating 10°C and 40°C attic. I do not have high hopes 😢
I'm now the proud owner of an Atari 520 STFM. 4th retro computer in just the last couple of weeks 🤦
Another system that needs a really good clean, but it turns on to a whitish screen and it beeps when typing but nothing more to see. Apparently the floppy drive is also not working, but I may have a replacement for that if I don't get a Gotek drive.
An #Atari prototype computer at the #Bonami computer museum in Zwolle, Netherlands.
Unfortunately it didn't say of what the prototype was.
Judging from the keyboard it's either ST, TT or Falcon related. #RetroComputing#VintageComputing#RetroGaming#AtariST
Edit: It says Mega ST on the board.
Do folks have any Atari ST thoughts/opinions they want to share? I know almost nothing about the ST (other than that it had MIDI ports). Feel free to post thoughts/opinions below!
