With their heads lodged up #Trump's stinky dumper, #Republicans continue to push for the stupid #borderWall. This is a politically-conceived project for political gain. It has nothing to do with effective #borderSecurity. It wasn't devised by security professionals who understand the needs, and potential solutions for improving security. No actual security professionals would suggest such a stupid endeavor. The wall would be a monument to Trump, nothing more.
“We as South Africans sense, see, hear and feel to our core the inhumane, discriminatory policies and practices of the Israeli regime as an even more extreme form of the #apartheid that was institutionalized against black people in my country.”
— Vusimuzi Madonsela, South African ambassador to the #Netherlands
A record number of nations participated in the hearing at the International Court of Justice concerning the legality of Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, now in its 8th decade. A ruling is not expected for a few months.
In 2004, the International Court of Justice ruled that Israel's separation wall in occupied Palestine is illegal and ordered it be dismantled and compensation paid to those affected. Israel ignored the ruling (as it has ignored every UN resolution and ruling of international law against it) and its western allies did nothing to ensure the ruling was observed.
Yesterday morning I lucked onto a Border Patrol repair crew welding up cuts in the border fence. This crew does 5-10 quick fixes/day, then a contractor comes back and does more "permanent" fixes. If a fix is too good, the human traffickers who cut the fence will just cut the bollard next to it.
New photojournal story about the border and asylum seekers. This one from my day there December 23rd when another photographer and I timed it right to see a "coyote" bring a large group of people through the U.S.-Mexico border fence.
On Christmas morning, I went to the U.S.-Mexico border fence before dawn to take some photos and write a story about the asylum seekers just south of me at the Lukeville, AZ crossing. I hope you like it. I have several more in the works.
Every time I hear someone go on about "border security" I'm going to post this video of me pushing open a "gate" cut by cartels in the border fence; a fence that cost billions of dollars and is easily defeated by cheap cordless cutting tools.
There are two ways to have a secure border: place groups of soldiers in fortified bunkers every 100' along the entire length of the fence 24/7 (no, don't do this), or by helping to stabilize the economic and security situations in the countries people are arriving from while also having a humane and easy to navigate immigration policy.
Many of the people coming here in hopes of asylum are arriving from countries with a history of U.S. support for dictators (e.g. Honduras, Nicaragua) or as direct or indirect climate refugees. Given that the U.S. is the second largest greenhouse gas emitter (and, I believe, the largest per capita), we legitimately owe these people safe harbor.
Back in the 90s I taught Chairman Juan Mancias’ son his 7th grade biology at a local public school in Texas. Now this tribal leader of the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe is battling the border wall in Texas.
For the first time under President Joe #Biden, officials are using authority established under former President Donald #Trump to waive dozens of laws in order to continue construction on the racist southern #border wall.
" #Biden said he 'can’t stop' the money being spent on border barriers because of the way it was appropriated by Congress. That’s correct, experts told us...
'The #borderwall — the money was appropriated for the border wall. I tried to get them to reappropriate it, to redirect that money. They didn’t. They wouldn’t. And in the meantime, there’s nothing under the law other than they have to use the money for what it was appropriated. I can’t stop that.'”
An eclipse is on the way! Check it out, but wear eclipse glasses. Also, a new Meta AI is generating some interesting stickers, Kaiser Permanente workers are on strike, the Biden Administration is facilitating more border wall construction, and a little known app was founded in 2010.
U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas rebuffed growing criticism over his decision to approve the construction of more than a dozen miles of border walls along the U.S.-Mexico border.
The Biden administration tells CBS News it "was bound by law to follow through with the project."
it's not that we want to play gotcha with the #biden stans on here. it's that we want you to do the mental & emotional work of staying present with what's actually happening so that we can work together for justice. we can tell you're doing that work when you're willing to post about the Ls like you post about the Ws #BorderWall
