Reading today's New York Times about the police repsonse to protests at Columbia University, NYC,

I realize, once again

that , and left "news" sites like Rolling stone, wonkette, etc etc are in general actually much less useful then the Times

a really hard lesson that

in 1932 caused student protests by dismissing a popular instructor, Oakely Johnson.

Johnson was then invited to speak at by students, along Corliss Lamont (of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University family).

Lamont said:

"The situation is the same among the workers as among the students. As a president of a corporation hires thugs to beat up his workers so college presidents let loose the cops to beat up their students."

I’ve Covered Violent Crackdowns on for 15 Years. This Overreaction Was Unhinged.
When police attacked student , a lone trash can was the only damaged property I saw around City College of New York.
Between and , over 200 protesters — almost all — were arrested before the night was out.
Brutal policing and groundless excuses are nothing new, nor is bipartisan support for the crackdowns.

“The administration said that the protests were a disruption and presented safety risks, but it is the administration itself that has disrupted campus life by locking us out, relocating or postponing students’ exams, bringing in police to arrest students, and inviting police to remain on campus for the next two weeks until graduation.” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/may/01/columbia-university-student-protesters-arrested-faculty-reacts

"The important dividing line isn’t between 1968 and 2024. Rather it’s between those who refuse to “take sides” and those who understand that in times of war, there is no defensible “middle ground.” At the end of the day, the “liberal” position which finds fault with both the Zionist and Palestinian positions is a function of privilege and fundamentally ends up supporting the status quo"
