Finally got around to watching @pluralistic#defcon31 talk and... DAMN! It's a very cutting look at what's happened to the internet and what it could be. My words don't do it justice. Just go watch.
I think @thedarktangent will be happy to know I can report my ifixit kit and my Wera screwdriver (the small non ratchet one) both made it through TSA without issue. TSA did have to pull my bag out to inspect the ifixit kit but that’s usual and let me on through.
This is in reference to a discussion on here a couple weeks post #DEFCON31 #DEFCON
Preparing for my upcoming trip and just dumping all the #DEFCON31 talks and presentations on my Pinebook Pro. May as well finally watch all the @defcon talks I missed even while I was there
watching https://libre.video/videos/watch/fb9554dc-1d02-4287-88ef-a897e488e80c and Cory #Doctorow is most definitely is right about the creeping conglomeration of powers across industries, to a small set of very powerful individuals, due to a lack of consumer rights, the elimination of competition, and the ongoing weakening of anti-trust rules and user protection entities
Then, it abuses those users to make things better for business customers.
Finally, it abuses the business customers to claw back all the value that had once been allocated to those end users and those business customers, and allocates it to themselves.
And then, there’s no value left and it turns into a pile of shit and it dies”
“The lesson of #enshittification is not that we have uniquely evil tech leaders. The lesson of enshittification is that we have uniquely weak constraints on ordinary people that leads them into this absolutely wicked course of action”—@pluralistic
So I hacked my @purism Librem Key to fit my #DEFCON31 exclusive Keyport along with my @yubico live on #Twitch . I had to use a 5/32 drill bit to widen the hole of my Librem Key to fit the female screw socket right above the spring to keep it flat.
I can’t wait until my second Keyport comes in for my actual keys. I was surprised how amazing this was when I saw it in person at #DEFCON
I'd gone to the EFF's Tech Trivia game because @cooperq was wearing a three piece tiger suit, and I was in fursuit, and I thought it'd be a fun photo together.
I sat down at a table with a bunch of friendly folks, many of whom were at their first #DEFCON.
We ended up getting 2nd place before donations ("bribes"), 1st place after. We decided to take a group photo together afterward.
Sometimes your hotel wifi is sketchy and you only find out how sketchy it is when you're trying to push to GitHub. Find out how you can use Tailscale to help with this here: https://tailscale.dev/blog/on-the-node-while-on-the-road
Some highlights from #DEFCON31! It was a huge honor to get to moderate the CISA/ONCD Secure by Design panel at @defconpolicy
, kicked off by none other than Jen Easterly. And always a pleasure to work with @jackhcable, who is truly delightful. 1/
AMBE and CODEC2 3200 bps are grossly insufficient. The voice quality demos ORI ran (this year and last year) with higher bitrate OPUS codecs confirmed this quite firmly. Better quality reduces fatigue and feels modern, fresh, and innovative. Want to help?
I got my #DEFCON31 exclusive Keyport setup with my @yubico and @purism Librem Key. I wish the Librem key had a proper circular hole to properly fit. Maybe I’ll drill it out later to fit. Once I get the iPhone 15 I will probably move from my 5Ci to just a 5C which I already have two of. I’m glad to be a #yubicoambassador and now waiting for the NFC business card from Keyport
@yubico@purism Loved my Keyport so much for my Yubico and Purism Librem Key so much I got at #DEFCON, I actually bought a second one, and noticed they still had some #DEFCON31 stuff left, and bought the last pocket clip, a DEFCON 31 faceplate, and a stainless steel keyport for my door keys
