A distributed social web of meaningful relationships.

Instead of a few centralized walled-garden apps that only tell you what an unaccountable third party wants you to know.

P.S. Still working on the messaging... how can I improve this?

mousey,
@mousey@seattlematrix.org avatar

@J12t

I keep seeing people lamenting being unable to game a following together because of a lack of algorithm.

What you're saying resonates with me because I never wanted that. Never joined a commercially run, centralized, social network, because I never saw it as a "network".

means, when I follow someone (or someone follows me), I'm building my own social network out of people I personally want to associate with.

That value is worth well more than an algorithm could provide.

@scott can we, perchance, instead, stop making tech bros?

Well, it looks like I'm gonna have to reinstall macOS on my MBP.

Surprisingly, this is the first time I had to do a OS reinstall in quite some time.

I'm kind of excited!

@majorlinux do a linux! 😁

mousey,
@mousey@seattlematrix.org avatar

@majorlinux been daily driving linux for decades now. It hase come a very long way, and I'd definitely not ever trade back!

yes, you may miss the cozy familiarity of your prefirnished apartment, rented from apple or MS, the ones with the furniture nailed down. its easy to complain about all the things you can't fix..

but owning a linux home? it's all yours. It takes a bit more to move into, what with the wide variety of furniture to choose from, yet no landlord to (refuse to) fix things!

So to summarize:
Adopting BDS is criminalized
Criticizing Israel is antisemitic
Appealing to ICJ is unwarranted
Funding UNRWA is banned
Appealing to ICC Is banned
Ending the occupation is off the table
Ending the settlements is off the table
The peaceful Great March of Return is banned
Protesting peacefully on college campuses is antisemitic
Demanding return of Palestinian children held in indefinite detention in Israeli prisons is not even an option

So what are Palestinians supposed to do??

mousey,
@mousey@seattlematrix.org avatar

@FrankFrank @QasimRashid There are no more Palestinian universities. 🤦‍♂️

@boilingsteam@mastodon.cloud avatar

We have been seeing in ProtonDB data that Ubuntu has been progressively losing steam (and market share) amongst gamers, what do you think of this observed trend? Rings true or not?

mousey,
@mousey@seattlematrix.org avatar

@boilingsteam the past (no shit) 12 laptops in the last 15 years i've acquired all came from e-recyclers. they all still work (though i've either given them away, or don't use them), and all run Linux.

buying a "new laptop" (that isn't a Framework Laptop) doesn't compute. There are plenty of laptops with decades (plural) of life left in them, just avoid Windows and MacOS, and you've got a good tool available to use for many years!

Mine are gen 4 to gen 8 intel laptops, to be specific.

I've been using the Linux Desktop, on every computer, for 26 years, non-stop..

I'm but one of the 4% of us, that's all there is.

So really.. I wish "be the change you wanna see in the world" was more rewarding than this??

Nearly everyone reading this is on a computer of some kind that's spying on them, using software they don't own...

Nearly everyone having to use a computer, for nearly any business..

Nevertheless, I'm not changing my mind.

I shouldn't have to clarify this but damn:

ONE SONG, pick 1
Its not popular, most people wouldn't know it
It was not a released as a single, you have to listen to the album to find it

Linux experts: I have the 6.5 and 6.1 kernels installed, but system boots automatically into 6.1 -- any guidance on why that's happening and how (or whether) I can force it to boot into 6.5?

(Assuming a GRUB issue but I don't want to muck with that in a casual way...)

mousey,
@mousey@seattlematrix.org avatar

@dangillmor

Hi, sorry, sort of picking thru this thread for more info,

If no option comes up, a) are you sure it's grub? and b) it might come up super fast, or before the screen displays, either way, after the POST beep, you should be able to interrupt it (and get the screen) by mashing the arrow keys.

Depending on your distro, the lazy way to fix this would probably involve using your package manager. Not knowing what it is, I can't suggest what you might try though. need more infos.

Here's a radical idea:

What if our data wasn't being collected and sold PERIOD?! https://infosec.exchange/@BleepingComputer/112011080969224373

mousey,
@mousey@seattlematrix.org avatar

@majorlinux That would imply we as a people, understand the intrinsic value of our own data, and don't store and transmit it like it's meaningless and worthless.

your data has meaning and worth. Society doesn't often remind people that they have meaning and worth, so internalizing that your data does too.. Well.. A bridge too far, perhaps..

So we keep getting bought and sold.. =(

Vice laid off hundreds of workers, and the threat of deletion has journalists rushing to back up their work as system privileges are being revoked.

The CYBER podcast team still had upload access, so they used that opportunity to upload a rogue episode. It's a very interesting and frank discussion about the company that does not paint the company (specifically, the C-suite) in a good light.

Vice took down the episode, so you can no longer find it on official feeds.

I'm attempting to articulate the difference between chat, chat-in-a-group and posting-plus-responses for others to overhear as we do on social networks. (IMHO the clear boundaries between those can only be historically explained because certain products did certain things and that sort of defined the categories.)

I'm playing with "1-on-1 communication", "group communication", and "social communication" as terms. Are there better ones?

mousey,
@mousey@seattlematrix.org avatar

@J12t

there's "Chatting", and "Posting", seems..

Chatting is generally synchronous, text, voip, audio.. one on one, or in groups

Posting is more asychronous.. reddit, masto, bulletin board systems..

Seems you're simply either chatting or posting.

a recent addtiion is the return of the Multi User Dungeons.. think googledocs, miro boards, or collabora office..

Beyond MUDs, there's LAN games, and MMOs. Oh, and a whole genre of anime about interactions in virtual worlds..
