I’m prepping for my credential rollover and setting up the new @yubico 5C NFC keys they sent me as I’m a yubico ambassador and decided to get the @defcon stickers from Keyport to style the new keys I will be swapping to as I’m deprecating USB A. Also got new Keyport covers for backups and to swap out my current ones for a different style.
Found out there are quite a few cybersecurity events local to me so I will be attending those over the next few months, while also taking my CISSP classes, and my CISSP test this summer, as well as DEFCON, B Sides, and more.
This is going to be a very interesting summer for me.
I purchased a portable gravity water filter for my next DEFCON trip, I will not be a schmuck spending so much money on bottled water to pour into my 511 hydration pack in my backpack. I'm just going to filter it in the hotel room and call it a day.
I like to make sure all my trip supplies are ordered and prepared one month in advance so I can focus on small odds and ends. I usually also have a bag packed 3 days before departure so I can double and triple check.
Well shit, I may have to buy a new iPod Classic before my next DEFCON. Not looking forward to dropping another $250 total to build another one though I may purchase a pre mod one this time as I am planning for the Tangara but won't be available until after this summer.
Looks like the hold button on the iPod stopped working and it may be an issue at the motherboard. Still can listen to music and such, but just annoying having it hit buttons on accident sometimes.
I'm debating if I am taking @mullvadnet again this year to #DEFCON or @protonprivacy but I guess it comes down this year to, "Which can I make work easier on my new ARM powered Pocket Reform by @mntmn"
Yes I am very aware I can just run it through OpenVPN, but I would like a nice GUI if possible for my lazy ass.
yesterday i brought up the first production MNT Pocket Reform motherboard (no problems so far) and the team started assembling the first devices :3 i'm a bit behind on the software and docs side but crunching as fast as i can
@thomholwerda@mntmn as long as it gets here in time to setup for #DEFCON, I really don't care. Even if I would love to have it in my hands right now.
I liked my Pinebook Pro, but it felt... lacking in the specs department. Where as the Pocket Reform it's upgradeable and already eyeing the RK3588 upgrade after I get my initial unit and benchmark it for my own needs.
It looks like @mntmn Pocket Reform is shipping around May if you order one now. So I'm hoping that (unless I am mistaken) my non hyper purple version should be shipped as soon as end of this month, and as late as early May.
I am really excited to get this in my EDC bag so I can lighten my backpack from 2 full sized laptops (work and personal) to the Pocket Reform and full laptop.
This should make my #DEFCON bag way lighter too, as I only need my iPod, Hydration pack, and laptop.
Any word on when @mntmn may finally be shipping the non-hyper versions of their units. I am dying to downsize from my Purism Librem 14 being my daily carry device and going to a smaller device. Not that I am complaining about my Purism device, but just the weird daily of carrying my work laptop, and personal laptop daily to work.
Plus I want to see how well it will do stock for #DEFCON and if I want to upgrade to the RK3588 sooner or later. I have a feeling it's going to become my go to device
Think I am just going to reset my Pixel 7a with Graphene OS for my minimalist phone. I refer to this as the #DEFCON phone as it's the phone I brought with me to DEFCON but it's expanded to my international phone as I travel.
Since I am still paying for that number and plan, I may as well just keep that phone going instead of add yet another phone line. I have too many cell lines as it is
After being in Chicago for the dental society midwinter and testing out my backpack kit for #defcon I have decided to downsize my ifixit kit to the essentials and make a few other additional changes to lessen my load I am carrying and may swap to a roller bag as my second carry on.
It’s been hard downsizing since my MSP days because mentally I still think I need a whole bunch of tools I don’t actually need
Already working on my #DEFCON hardware prep. Working on a zero trust setup for my laptops. Once again of course one of them will be my @QubesOS laptop running on my @purism Librem 14. But also a Windows powered MSI QS65 for OBS, my @system76 Pangolin for my trainings as I need basic Linux with some pen test tools, then waiting for my @mntmn pocket reform with a cell modem.
Someone just dropped off a bunch of old tech and wanted me to see if I wanted anything. There was even a still unused MSI QS65 with an Nvidia 20 series GPU. Perfect for my mobile OBS station I was working on making. So now I can actually have a reason to make my OBS portable and work on that zero trust setup for #DEFCON a couple small laptops perfect for a small notebook with #Linux but still preferring the Pocket Reform coming soon from @mntmn#Infosec#Cybersecurity
#DefCon announces new location and theme of engagement for 2024, citing Cult of the Dead Cow's private, open-source file-sharing and messaging protocol Veilid as an example. https://forum.defcon.org/node/248361
I have been very critical of @defcon in recent years for their continued use and endorsement of privacy-hostile centralized walled garden apps and services.
It was sad watching US hacker culture largely give up on digital privacy and freedom.
Then I saw the theme of the next DEF CON is literally this exact issue. A call to engage with each other to take back the internet.
Heading back to the UK from #FOSDEM and what an amazing event once again. The #LinuxOnMobile stand was packed for two days continuous and it was wonderful to talk to so may #SailfishOS users, users of other mobile Linux distros and curious explorers!
I never understood why #defcon was in a casino. Doesn't that exclude a bunch of people from your conference that cannot be near gambling for their own safety?
Wow. " After a great 25 year relationship Caesars abruptly terminated their contract with DEF CON, leaving us with no venue for DC 32, and just about seven months to Con! https://forum.defcon.org/node/248360 #defcon#defcon32#dc32
