Hast Du diesen Vortrag gesehen?
Let's switch back to English, as this discussion is probably interesting for many users.
Very interesting perspective of yours, Felicitas. So you are saying that the (full) implementation EU's #DigitalMarketsAct (#DMA) will leed to the US #geoblocking websites from the EU?
So the exiting fragmentation of the #Fediverse, in particular the complete unawareness of many users of the "#darknet" part of it, would be the shape of things to come?
Why? I can see that there will be the...
I'm writing a blog piece about the Digital Markets Act in the EU, and legislation of the same name in the UK. As well as others laws in play or on the horizon to regulate digital services.
@strypey I’m sure I’m not representative here, but I’m bothered that the #DigitalMarketsAct (DMA) is needed. It’s only because the consumer masses are spineless pushover zombies that the status quo is what it is.
What if you force #GAFAM to split up a bit more? I think you end up with just a few more shitty options. An econ prof once told me 2 or 3 competitors is insufficient. To get a pro-consumer market you need at least 6 competitors.
I don’t oppose the DMA but I have little enthusiasm.
I — an #Android developer that is interested in #multiplatform development via #KMP — am looking forward to a future where I can easily sideload my small & free apps on iOS devices & distribute them through other stores w/o having to pay 100USD/year for an Apple dev account that I otherwise don't need.
Nice to see the #EU#DigitalMarketsAct start to influence #BigTech's approach to their restrictive policies: looks like #Google is reconsidering allowing #ChromeOS users to install APKs outside of #GooglePlay. That gives users the freedom to use other app sources like #FDroid, easily debug apps, and more.
My next book is The Internet Con: How to Seize the Means of Computation: it's a #BigTech disassembly manual that explains how to disenshittify the web and bring back the old good internet. The hardcover comes from Verso on Sept 5, but the #audiobook comes from me - because Amazon refuses to sell my audio:
The Internet Con describes how this came to pass, but, more importantly, it tells us how to fix it. It lays out how we can combine different kinds of interop requirements (like the EU's #DigitalMarketsAct and #Massachusetts's #RightToRepair law) with protections for #ReverseEngineering and other guerrilla tactics to create a system that is strong without being brittle, hard to cheat on and easy to enforce.
When Meta finally gets serious about entering the EU is the time they'll get serious about #ActivityPub.
"The #EU’s #DigitalMarketsAct (DMA) is a 2022 legislation that regulates the digital market competition in the region. It prevents #TechGiants (#Meta, #Amazon, #Apple, and #Google) from cornering the market of a specific product or service, and allows smaller companies to compete against them."
