The fact that after EU passed Digital Markets Act, non-Chrome/Safari browsers begin to increase their share, shows that even a watered down law can make a difference. That's not to say it's all over – on the contrary, it's important to push further and make sure Apple/Google truly give people the choice – but the signs are so far positive https://www.reuters.com/technology/eus-new-tech-laws-are-working-small-browsers-gain-market-share-2024-04-10/

While Alphabet seems to be better in terms of the new & choice screens, they have a strange view regarding their new obligation to allow un-installing pre-installed apps like or :

Alphabet's lobbyists argue un-install and remove are two different things and as the 's Art 6(3) only mandates un-install but not removal, the current "deactivation" feature in Android would be enough. 🤔

If you needed any more proof that the so-called is an front, their lobbyist just asked whether it wasn't worried that 3rd party app stores are dangerous to users and would put a control process in place (like Apple does). 😠

I'm sitting in the @EU_Commission compliance workshop for right now and as much as I appreciate the format, it's frustrating to see that Apple is the only party on the panel and in addition has its proxies like and the in the audience that are allowed to ask convenient questions and steer the discussion in Apple's interest.

It looks like is using salami tactics with the @EU_Commission on compliance, giving up tiny slices in hope that might sway (and shut up) the regulator and the public.

I sincerely hope the Commission's enforcement team is not being fooled by this.

@pjol Actually, I agree. The main concerns around WhatsApp aren't its bad interoperability, but its bad privacy practices. I see that those would also affect Signal users if interoperability between the two messengers was established. 😕
