Thanks to the Developers Alliance for their event on the #DigitalMarketsAct! The #DMA and #DataAct are a key part of the #EU's strategy to create a competitive market for apps & cloud services. The #EU needs to be clearer about the opportunities this creates for devs!

🇪🇺 Apple admits third-party App Stores in Europe are inevitable

「 Apple says that if the commission Apple gets on App Store sales is reduced, "the Company's business, results of operations and financial condition could be materially adversely affected." 」
Das Gesetz über digitale Dienste (DSA) und das Gesetz über digitale Märkte (DMA) wollen einen sichereren digitalen Raum für alle Menschen in der EU schaffen.
The folks over @beuc have commissioned a study examining the design of choice screens in te #DMA; and it is impressive to see how minuscule changes in #ChoiceScreen design impact people's ability to actually make a choice.
Their recommendations:
1️⃣ Incorporate positive friction
2️⃣ Show Google "below the fold"
3️⃣ Use buttons that contextualise the expected user action
4️⃣ Keep branding and logos of options
Repeating a thought from a week or so ago: Maybe opensource devs & indie creators need our own payment processor?
Stripe's pretty nice, but I'd rather not rely on VC startups. Maybe a cooperative alternative?
To be clear this would be a business endeavor satisfying Visa/Mastercard/etc rather than a technology.
You may argue this shouldn't be needed, but it is. I often see fellow techies overlook this need when proposing Patreon or Bandcamp or (prompting this toot) YouTube alternatives.

> Also there's RFC 8905 payto: URIs. If we can get banks to adopt either (Taler could be built upon RFC8905), that'd be great! I'm not holding my breath though
Maybe the companies that make up the payment processing oligopoly need to be identified as Gatekeepers under the EU Digital Markets Act, and forced to adopt appropriate interop standards?
So with the new #digitalMarketsAct forcing #WhatsApp to open their messaging to support third party apps, how do we feel about doing this to other gatekeeping platforms?
#PayPal very likely has more than 45 million users in the EU, and they have a messaging system built into the transactions. Surely it makes sense that they also need to open their messaging to third party apps.
I would love to be able to DM my friends on PayPal from #Signal.😂

Apple's latest financial filings show that the company expects to be forced into allowing third-party App Store across Europe, starting in 2024.
