#SherlockHolmesAndTheVoiceOfTerror has got a lovely little #FilmScore.

Very reminiscent of the era, of course, but that’s not a negative.

Limelight (1952)

This American comedy-drama film was written, produced, and directed by its star Charlie Chaplin, based on his own novella. Chaplin also composed the film score, with Buster Keaton appearing in their final musical number.

Released during the McCarthy era of political repression and fear campaigns, featuring the persecution of allegedly left-wing individuals, the film was picketed and heavily boycotted in the US.

Following the film’s re-release in the United States in 1972, and first screening in Los Angeles, Chaplin won his only Oscar for the film’s score at the 45th Academy Awards. ‘Limelight’ has since gained a cult following.

Recommended viewing (even if 10 minutes too long).

If you missed my struggles in my livestream, you can watch it on youtube! Polytempos as a technique is very challenging... at least for me, anyway. But, this was apparently one of the techniques hans zimmer used in Christopher Nolan's, Inception to illustrated the different dream layers in the film.

Music of the Day, 125 of 365

"A.I.: Artificial Intelligence" from 2001 is a film that still provokes discussion (is it good? Would it have been better if Spielberg didn't direct it?). It's a sprawling epic of a world of robots, flooded coastlines, and questions on what makes a person real. Or it's a super expensive version of Pinocchio....

Either way, it gave us another John Williams & Steven Spielberg collaboration. The highlight for me is the theme for the relationship between the robot child & the human mother. It's best presented at the end of the film where in the far future advanced robots are able to grant the "child's" wish of one more day with his mother - it can only last one day, as that's the limit of the future bots' abilities to bring back a human.

The sequence is heartbreaking, but as John Williams interpreted it in an interview, it finally allows the child to do something that all life does - die. The music throughout, while it has its lighter moments, is constantly expressing sadness and a sense of finality, even in what appears to be a happy, joyous day.

Music of the Day, 117 of 365

Somehow eclipsing the theme from the original "Star Trek" TV series, Jerry Goldsmith's theme from "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" is so astoundingly good that it was used (slightly modified by the composer) for the 1980s sequel TV show, "Star Trek: The Next Generation". And with the exception of the first film featuring that cast, Goldsmith composed the scores for three "Next Gen" films that followed, using that theme extensively.

Maybe its best presentation is from "Star Trek: First Contact", where Goldsmith also wrote one of his best alternate themes in the Star Trek musical oeuvre. The two are featured in the end credits for the movie (the new theme sandwiched between two performances of the other).

One is a big & triumphant march that evokes sailing and adventure, the other a lush, almost pastoral piece that slows things down, while also feeling triumphant in its own way. There's a reason that both themes were re-used (wonderfully, I might add) in the final season of the latest Star Trek show... it's because they are so beautifully powerful.

Hello, I'm Holland. New to Mastodon.

I'm a composer/pianist who writes fantasy-inspired orchestral and piano music. I share my songs on YouTube and release albums every now and then on streaming platforms.

Sometimes, I share scores in the form of videos on my YouTube channel so you can follow along with the music if you enjoy that sort of thing.

I'm currently writing the soundtrack for a video game and would like to eventually move into the world of animated film scoring (I love animation!).

I'll keep this post short and share one of my songs below.

I hope that you enjoy listening to my music, and that it carries you away to far-off worlds.

Thank you :)
