Denying pregnant people emergency abortion care under EMTALA advances Christian Nationalism
By Kalyn Mizelle McDaniel May 01, 2024
"...Abortion bans violate the separation of church and state by imposing one narrow religious viewpoint on everyone. Removing EMTALA protections from pregnant women goes a step further by advancing the Christian Nationalist commitment to relegating women to second-class citizenship. According to complementarianism, which is intrinsically intertwined with Christian Nationalism, cisgender woman have a distinct role. Motherhood and submission to men are key parts of the separate role women play. The incapability of the role is evidence of its second-class nature. Complementarianism is diametrically opposed to the liberation of women, and fittingly, limiting the instances in which their wellbeing can be protected in emergency rooms aligns with that ideology..."
"Q: This is all happening within the context of Alabama’s abortion ban. How do you feel about abortion & restrictions in the state?
A: I am definitely pro-choice. Everyone’s situation is different.
Q: How do you feel about lawmakers & judges across Alabama lumping together IVF restrictions and restrictions on abortion?
A: They’re completely different. Most of the embryos that are discarded at a fertility clinic would not make a baby, they are embryos that don’t meet the criteria to be frozen. Are there embryos that may be genetically perfectly normal that patients are discarding because they’re done with their family?...And there are options to donate to people who want to do embryo adoption or to donate to science for research. That is the parent’s choice to make—who helped create those embryos—not the government who’s just sitting behind a desk."

This webinar is the latest offering of AU’s SRF365 webinar series, and is just one example of the dynamic programming attendees can expect at our second annual Summit for Religious Freedom (SRF) on April 13-16, 2024, in person in Washington, D.C., and virtually.
The US government no longer works for the people. It is a white nationalist christo-fascist theocracy in the making. And these members of congress who are violating their oaths to uphold the constitution, including freedom of religious practice for everyone, should be removed immediately.
Instead they are holding the government hostage to impose their false religious beliefs onto everyone, especially people who are not members of their cult.
We need to stand up for freedom for all people of all faiths or no faiths, and resist #TheNewInquisition in every way.
"Our cover story features an interview with Dan Partland, director of the compelling new documentary “God & Country," which outlines the threat Christian Nationalism poses to our democracy (and which features commentary from AU’s Andrew L. Seidel and me).
While you’re there, check out AU President and CEO Rachel Laser’s column detailing why she is thankful for the Christians who are openly opposing the idea that Christian Nationalism is rooted in true Christian values; gain insight into how we are stepping up our efforts to protect reproductive freedom in Missouri and other states; and get the background on how activist Jeryl Marcus of AU's El Paso Chapter turned public prayer at local county government meetings into a valuable opportunity to promote church-state separation."
Tomorrow some of your Christian students may be observing the Christian holiday of Yom Saint Valentine Ha’Kadosh, more commonly known as Christian Tu B’Av. It is one of their important religious ‘Feast Days’ that even the least frum observe.
There needs to be a secularisation of NGO/Private-sector public service providers.
There have been too many cases of religious organisations impeding on the ‘freedom of religion’ of individuals, even if it breaches their ‘duty of care’.
Does your shul, chavurah, or women's group struggle to find meaningful rituals for women who had a miscarriage or needed an abortion?
Rabbi Danya has you covered.
The Chevra very much believes in ritual & embodied practices, especially for women - whose needs have been largely ignored by patriarchy.
"Rituals matter. They can help to ground and mark us at times of change & transition. They can connect the mundane and challenging moments in our lives to our heritage, to our tradition, to who we are, to the sacred, and to the divine.
Rituals can hold space for our feelings & our truths, providing containers for us to own and express them. They can also be ways of claiming as holy moments & acts not always regarded as such by our society: like taking ownership of one’s body, like accessing care for pregnancy or miscarriage, like addressing multi-layered feelings about accessing that care."
As world leaders gather in NYC for the #SDGSummit2023 check out this new book edited by my
colleagues Mariz Tadros, Phil Mader & Kathryn Cheeseman on how religious inequality hinders sustainable development & how freedom of religion & belief is a blindspot in development
Christianity does not have the right to decide for everyone else what is acceptable clothing, social or sexual relationships, culture, beliefs, or lifestyle.
Christianity only has the right to tell their own cult members what to do or not do.
Legislating religious beliefs is unconstitutional, period.
Legislating christian religious beliefs about abortion, lgbtq, women's rights, or anything else is a violation of my 1st amendment right to freedom of religious practice.
It is also a violation of the UN Charter of Human Rights - especially prohibitions against forced pregnancy.
