Two thrilling walks over the weekend. First was over Hart Fell near #Moffat and along the narrowest ridge line I’ve followed. Yesterday was Grey Mare’s Tail, then around the horseshoe above it.
Fun fact: Grey Mare’s Tail is so called because the drive from Edinburgh is an absolute ‘mare.
Suckin' boot and blawin' soot today. Ben Challum in Glen Dochart, more snow than expected and boggy lower down. Good day out but pity the clag didn't clear for us. Munro no. 67.
Looking down a snow-covered Ben Vane in the Arrochar Alps today to Loch Lomond and across to Loch Arklet and then a distant Loch Katrine, the source of Glasgow's water suppy since the 1850s.
Nan Shepherd (1893–1981) was born #OTD, 11 Feb. Recently her nature writing, & her memoir THE LIVING MOUNTAIN, has gained attention—but she was also an important #modernist novelist. Charlotte Peacock weighs her contribution to Scotland’s literary renaissance
On a recent trip to Edinburgh I activated Arthur's Seat GM/SS-272 (251m) for the Summits on the Air scheme. A pleasant little 1-point summit walking distance from the city centre. An early weekday start meant the summit was quiet 🏔️🚶🏻 #sota#summitsontheair#hillwalking
One of the things I love about Glasgow is how close it is to the mountains. In particular, you can be in the Arrochar Alps within an hour. This area has five Munros and eight Corbetts, including the Cobbler, which was home to Scotland's first climbing club, founded in 1866.
This was the view from Ben Vorlich today back through the western parts of the Arrochar Alps and down to Loch Lomond.
First Munro (and hill day) of 2024 - An Socach from Glen Clunie, near Braemar. Munro no. 66. Cool, crisp, clear day. Chased the mist, so clear by the time we got to the summit, but cold wind.
Today was the kind of crisp clear Autumn day for getting up early and heading out of the city for a bit. This was the view from Conic Hill at Balmaha across the islands of Loch Lomond to the distant Firth of Clyde. Well worth the effort!
I was looking back through my photos and found this one I'd taken earlier in the year of a painted stone someone had placed at the top of Ben Lomond, Glasgow's nearest mountain. It's an impressive bit of artwork.
Just one more from our first #hillwalking in #Sctoland near #Braemar in #Aberdeenshire.
Honestly, when I took it, I didn't think that it would turn out so strong. But I really like it now.
As my wife and me, both, wanted/needed new mouse pads, we ordered Mousepads with this photo. Best decision! Now I can see it all the day 🙂

“Join me on a summer camp in the mountains. This trip was a great lesson in how quickly weather conditions can change & why it's always important to have the appropriate gear with you for a camp or even a hike in these environments. With the right equipment & a little bit of experience, you can still have a great time in less than ideal conditions.”
“It has been a great start to the summer #hillwalking season in the UK this year. While we would still strongly advise packing your waterproof; suncream, sun hat and sunglasses have been important additions to our excursions into the hills.
Come rain or shine, our expert guide explains the hillwalking essentials you need for a classic day in the hills.”
After yesterday's beautiful colourful sunrise the day quickly turned cloudy, ending in heavy rain. Still a good walk over Creag Mhor. B&W images work best so here's a few. #Cairngorms#hillwalking#landscape
