:skull360: We have now successfully upgraded to v4.3.0-alpha.3+mementomods-2024-05-26. The server has Mastodon Bird UI 2.0.0rc37 installed with no further changes at this time in the UI.

The branch is now synced and up-to-date and 158 commits ahead from the last version 2024-05-01.

I love running the newest version so I can test ahead in production for the upcoming Mastodon Bird UI versions. I do have my local instance with the production db, but it is far more fun this way and it feels good to have new things.

This "testing in live" is also because it's the perfect way to make sure that I can help contributing to Mastodon and spot bugs before they end up in the final rc, beta or stable versions. There most probably will be some minor bugs, but the earlier we tackle them the better.

As usual, please tell me about any strange things you may encounter with this Mastodon version. We're running bleeding edge after all.

I hope you enjoy your time here. Feel free to send me a message if you have anything in mind. :bunhdheart:

Would Mastodon generally run better on 4 shared vCPUs or 2 dedicated vCPUs?

Ville,
@Ville@elytra15.com avatar

@koen Not really an issue, but if it would make the server faster in any way, it's better. The new VPS is not from the same supplier as before.

koen,
@koen@procolix.social avatar

@Ville in case you are comparing two providers the only way to know which one is better is to use them both.

Somehow I still find it funny that because my mastodon instance is hosted in Germany all the YouTube previews are in German

How can I determine which instances have blocked my instance?

@Revertron https://fba.ryona.agency
given that the instances exposes their blocked instances, which some don't do

Boy, I have not gotten this many reports on people on my server in some time. (carry on folks on my server, no violations here... but everyone is reporting everyone they disagree with on Gaza and Israel left and right...).

@ai6yr

When I ran a forum Israel/Palestine was the only forbidden subject.

It was guaranteed to quickly spiral out of control. Any moderation would be attacked as partisan and contribute to further escalation. This from people who would be very reasonable on any other subject.

Given that rapprochment and understanding is the only way to peace - allowing discussion would have the opposite affect.

Thanks to some sleuthing/fixing by @derickr (we were on a bugged ImageMagick version), if your phone was 500'ing on image uploads, that problem should be gone now on phpc.social. Please report 'em if you still see them!

I was looking for a project that would let me manage my Mastodon follows & followers better. Haven't found anything but did come across Mastodon+Steampipe. If you know of something, @ me

Anyone using Mastodon + Steampipe? Steampipe is an open-source zero-ETL engine to instantly query cloud APIs using SQL
https://hub.steampipe.io/plugins/turbot/mastodon

It has many different "recipes" to see the data on your instance/Mastodon account. https://hub.steampipe.io/plugins/turbot/mastodon/tables

Users &Admins can create access token and use it

erik,
@erik@puget.social avatar

@paul What's "ETL"?

paul,
@paul@oldfriends.live avatar

@erik

Extract, transform, load (ETL) is a three-phase process where data is extracted from a database, transformed (including cleaning), and loaded into an output data container.

Zero-ETL integration is a type of data integration that doesn’t involve the use of the conventional extract, transform and load (ETL) processes. In a zero-ETL setup, data is transferred directly from one system to another without the need for any intermediary steps to transform or clean the data.

Are you an admin of a fedi instance? Consider adding Federation support!

Can say that my block storage for is massively growing. A year ago it was stable at ~80-89Gb, but lately it's heading to 200Gb+

Growth past week, cleanup operations lower the storage size but on average it’s growing.

Admin, if you're reading this, consider using a CDN to deliver your media.

You can use services like Cloudflare (for free) or Bunny CDN (for cheap).

Recurrently, images and videos in a post fail to load here because it took too much time to download them.

And indeed, when you click to see the media, it takes a while to finish.

With a CDN you'll free your server from this load and distribute it via the CDN, from the closest point to your users.

Or, you know, other servers creating a cache of your images and videos. Mastodon does this by default.

Other platforms, like Akkoma, loads the file directly from your instance, so it's another burden taken away from your server if you use a CDN.

cadusilva,
@cadusilva@bolha.one avatar

@paul yes, I'm going with the slower-but-free way, using rclone as middleman :ms_hand_over_mouth:

Not so "free" as the API calls will certainly be costly, but yeah, no 3rd party service.

I'm not using any fancy setup here, I have just pointed the cdn subdomain to the R2 bucket and that's it.

No problems so far, as the CDN is also from Cloudflare. Everything in their internal network.

paul,
@paul@oldfriends.live avatar

@cadusilva

I have rclone trauma.😂 A decade ago, I misconfigured rclone doing a backup of my personal computer and lost everything in both directions. Luckily, I caught it early.

For my personal files, I have backups of my backups, so it was an easy fix. I've been afraid of rclone since.🤭

I've been reading the rclone guides over the past week but decided, $5.00 to transfer my instance with Flexify was worth it. I still have a credit from the first transfer.

Weekend is here so, now the 'No tomes Available' Sidekiq errors are starting to appear like clockwork as businesses that use their services do backups over the weekend put strain on Backblaze B2B and throttles available connections dynamically across their system.

Joy Joy for low-cost media storage of a . We get what we pay for. Luckily, for me, most of that media is from the Fediverse firehouse.

Really wish we could turn off Preview images, esp self-hosts

For the first time the Mastodon server has started to struggle just a little bit to keep up with the flow of the Fediverse.

We’ve usually been “push” heavy but we’ve started to see some spikes in “pull” queue latency. The worst of these spikes was today, where we fell behind by at least a couple minutes for most of the afternoon.

1/?

A pair of graphs showing sidekiq queue latency and enqueued jobs. The queue latency peaked at around 6 minutes at roughly 6pm this afternoon, but was between 1-2 minutes most of the afternoon. The maximum number of messages in queue at any one time was 12000. The majority of the traffic is pull queue.

Does anyone have a good post for generating a post bot? All I keep finding never really seems to make a lot of sense.

reiver,
@reiver@mastodon.social avatar

@CWSmith

If your intent is to program the bot yourself, then —

I would recommend first learning how to program BEFORE you try to create the bot.

...

There is a good book meant to teach programming to those who have no programming experience. It is called:

"Learn Python The Hard Way"

If you read that, and do all the exercises in the book, you should be able to do basic programming.

I find feed toot does the job:
