(2 of 4) I've been taking pictures since age 12, but don't kid myself that this is serious work. I just like framing images and would miss it badly if I stopped. Over the next few weeks, I'll post some old and new ones.
Metro-North station in Poughkeepsie, NY. October, 2011. Old! We were there for the Walkway over the Hudson, but the view only changed angles during the very long bridge walk.
The world's oldest forests are in New York state. We've known this since the 19th century when the town of Gilboa became famous for fossil forests that were around 380 million years old; in 2018, scientists revealed evidence of a 385-million-year-old forest in nearby Cairo. Last month that received funding to protect it as a first step towards turning it into an educational site. This summer, the Gilboa Museum will hold its first fossil walks. The BBC's Hillary Richard got a sneak preview.
I have a quick question for any #Gardeners in upstate #NewYork. Are there any examples of Fuyu persimmons growing in the area of #Albany New York? Or in the #HudsonRiver Valley?
I perhaps should elaborate a bit about this Fuyu persimmon query. I read that this variety grows OK in USDA Plant Hardiness Zone(s) 7 to 10.
The latest zones map for #NewYorkState shows that the area around Albany is the most northern extent of zone 6, running up the #HudsonRiver Valley from down-state. So I wondered if by some miracle, someone in the area is managing to grow one in a microclimate.
Window at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lake George, New York. I took this photo at my brother's funeral mass last Monday. It was a sad but hopeful day, and the setting made it more beautiful.
The village of Raquette Lake, in the central #Adirondacks of #NewYorkState, as seen from out on the lake in a misty morning.
It always amazes me how little people from outside NY tend to know about the Adirondack Park – like that it's bigger than Yellowstone, Glacier, Grand Canyon and the Everglades combined.
wife tested positive for covid. It's bad. Online Doc refused to prescribe #Paxlovid citing she's <50yrs. Said LongCovid isn't real and pretty much gaslit the thing.
PCP offices are closed.
CVS w/o prescription requires labwork that we don't have handy.
#ClimateDiary Saturday morning I was wondering whether people I know in real life even see these kinds of graphs. I decided to find out by sharing it in WhatsApp groups I am in (not all but was quite brave - included colleagues, family, etc) posting it with this message.
Entirely unscientific, badly worded etc, but I am so glad I did! I learned a number of interesting things:
In every group, 70-90 % of people had never seen this graph and do not normally see these graphs. 1/x
2/x #ClimateDiary I do think most people, whilst aware of #ClimateChange in general, are actually pretty oblivious to what is going on at the moment, in the #Antarctic and elsewhere.
I just did a mini-one person survey and asked my family this question: where in the world are #FlashFloods in last few days - right now?
First person didn't know of any. Still awaiting answers from rest of family.
