Lucy and I have restarted our twice a week public access training outings. Today was tiring, but Lucy did so well! I also scored two discounted bags of treats. Single ingredient meaty treats, which are her FAVOURITE! #ServiceDog#DogsOfMastodon#Labrador
I've made a GoFundMe to help with my service dog in training Lucy's vet costs. If anyone could donate even a little and/or share this, I would so greatly appreciate it. I'm not one for creating fundraisers and am embarrassed to do it, but trying to get Lucy the care she needs. Thanks so much for reading.

@actuallyautistic If you are an #autistic adult with a #servicedog trained to assist autistic adults… would you mind sharing some of the ways your service dog was trained to support you? Thank you!
X-ray results have brought even worse news about my retired service dog’s health. She has very bad cancer, and only has about a month to live. Her hips are also very bad. Shes prescribed pain meds… that’s all we can do for her now 💔 #ServiceDog
How to pick up around the house with your #ServiceDog a comprehensive guide:
Step one, throw the ball
Step two, dog runs and retrieves ball
Step three, dog stops along the way and picks up an item which does not belong
Step four, dog hands you both the item and the ball and you put the item away!
Repeat as many times as needed. And this, is how one cleans their house while sitting on their ass. Work smarter, not harder! 🌛🧡🤟🏻🎾💪
Does anyone here have familiarity with the process of getting a psychiatric service dog for an autistic child?
Our son has a really bad panic/flight thing going on, like bad enough that he’ll be wandering in his mind, then all of a sudden realize he’s not at home or school, and panic/freak out, and then bolt for the exit door and out into parking lots/roads with traffic, full speed, not stopping for anyone unless it’s me, my wife, or his siblings.
Recently he, my three year old, and myself were at Chili’s on a Saturday night eating dinner (he loves their blue lagoon drink), and I had to take the 3 year old to the bathroom to change his diaper. I told him where we were going, making sure he was paying attention and actually heard me. The bathroom was literally 15 feet away, he had even already gone and used it by himself while me and the 3 year old waited at the table. Anyway, I had just finished changing the 3 year old’s diaper and was about to walk out of the bathroom when one of the waiters opened the door and said “your kid is freaking out cause he thinks you left him.”
I walk out of the bathroom and start looking around and he’s at the entrance, out one set of doors and would have already been out the other into the parking lot with cars driving around were it not for a mom that was their with her family of four kids who did her best to hold him. Needless to say I ran to the door and grabbed him and picked him up but he was shaken to his core. He legitimately thought we had left him at Chili’s by himself.
So yeah, he definitely qualifies, but it’d be great to speak with someone who has gone through the process themselves so I get a better idea of what to expect.
Thank you in advance for reading my really long toot, and any help you can give.
@mikecherry Look into Canine Companions for Independence https://canine.org/service-dogs/our-dogs/who-we-serve/, as they work with folks nationwide. (My daughter raised a puppy for them when she was in college. The puppy then attended advance training and graduated from CCI’s campus in Irving, TX.)
Super happy to say that our consultation went great today, and we will be doing our service dog training with Canine Support Services! Lucy did super well, and the trainer was impressed with her. #ServiceDog
A relative is going to pay for two service dog training sessions a month for Lucy! Oh my gosh. I’m so relieved. I’m still solidifying things, but I’ll update when I know more. #ServiceDog
when you are Concerned about sopranos and trumpet players (she is right and she should say it) and are trying your best but also maybe your handler is Wrong and doesn't know it yet 😂
I've been talking about taking Callisto to the French Quarter to do some training now it's cooled down and since Mardi Gras is in like what... 5 months? So my work interpreter-- and one of my bffs-- surprised me today with braille maps of the French Quarter and the Central Business District so I can take them on our adventure. Yes I know we have GPS but sometimes it helps me to have physical copies of things like this especially when it's spacial information. #Deafblind#braille#ServiceDog
@sarahmatthews Oh cool what a brilliant idea to use Lego! I like these maps because you can follow the raised line of the road with your finger and actually trace out the route.
@Pawpower@sarahmatthews I love that idea. I had a colleague who used to do a lot of arty stuf. He made me a bunch of maps with sterdy cardboard and different fabrics with differentiated textures. Legos are much easier.
Went out to meet my uber and some guy was not watching and stuck his cigarette out on Phoenix's face, where her ear is. She's fine. But holy crap! Then when we sat to wait and so I could check her for injuries there were red ants under the bench and a couple climbed on her but she's clean now I got them off. Poor girl! We are going HOME! She will get extra snuggles. #ServiceDog
