Two sable German Shepherds charge along a long, empty beach. The water is calm and blue, with shoreline curves and small islands visible in the background. Each dog is carrying a bright blue and green toy.

🏘️ 🏚️ Excellent sample of when "letter of the law" is absolutely, no-question, morally WRONG. Anybody on here get a #mortgage "forgiven" back during the 2008(ish) financial crisis? You need to read this!

"We have a case where a portfolio of approximately 9,000 loans was sold for $6,000," she says. "And so each loan was sold for less than a dollar."

Haven't posted a sunset in a while. Had to make myself stop rushing around tonight and remember this view. There is even some rain lurking out there.... it makes one hopeful for an actual monsoon season this year. 🤞 🤞 🤞

I'm going to ramble a bit, but it will hopefully come around to something. When I was growing up, I read a lot of older historical book series, a big one would be the Little House On The Prairie series. While I really enjoyed it, there are some very obviously negative portrayals of Native Americans and African Americans. I remember being angry about it as a kid, and my Dad telling me, that part of learning about history is that we have to acknowledge the people we were, and still are. But because Little House on the Prairie is only semi-autobiographical, I still have mixed feelings about this. I do think they are well written books by a female author, an interesting perspective on early American life, and as an adult I can see and acknowledge the issues with the text. If we try to get rid of every author with racist ideas there wouldn't be much left to read from the 20th Century, and it also feels like being dishonest about who we are. So, I'm very mixed, how do you all feel about it? Do you think children can handle books with racial issues like this if it's explained to them? What is our responsibility here?

jnye,
@jnye@mstdn.plus avatar

@RickiTarr My opinion might be a bit out of step. I believe it depends heavily on whatever adults are helping a kid w/context. My parents deliberately had me read things that were pretty hair-raising, far more so than the Little House series. Age appropriate & all that, but enough to provide lots of "Wait, WHAT?" We talked about things & when I was old enough to start hearing all the "how I miss the good old days," even as a teen, my response was already: "And when exactly was that??"

I got my election assignment yesterday. I'm now an election worker. Not a volunteer. You get money for it. Not a huge amount. My thinking is that I have students who think the last presidential election was stolen. Well, shit, I think, I might as well go in and be able to tell them from personal experience how elections are run.

As best I can tell, it's by checklist. Checklists read aloud.

jnye,
@jnye@mstdn.plus avatar

@rjblaskiewicz

My mom used to do this (yes, paid), way back when paper ballots were all there was. I grew up with the perspective of her stories about the voting, work requirements, ballot-counting process after the polls closed. (All done on site by the workers, yes, aloud. Nobody was able to go home until they were finished.) I'm pretty sure it was one of the things that predisposed me to consider all the 'election scam' stuff was a pile of 💩 . Good luck. Hope you will post what you can.

📚 , , nerds: opinions, please? Reading or using term "faux pas"--we all know basic definition: social blunder. But do you assume-and/or do you think others assume--the term implies that the blunder happened b/c someone knew better & "oops, forgot!" Or that the blunder happened b/c someone didn't know better in 1st place? No wrong answers here. I just have reasons for wondering how others view this. Any input appreciated! 😎

How interesting. I played around with Bluesky for a while, but truly, it drove me nuts, and I wondered if all the effort would just go to hell (again) when/if he bailed (again). I was a very early Twitter user and am not interested in repeating my experience with that platform. At this point, I haven't even opened up BlueSky in several weeks. If I had any remaining doubt (as a totally NON-techie potential user), this will would kill it.

Good night from my beautiful (if def still under construction!) back yard... where is supported despite flaws. Where we understand that the alternative is unthinkable. Welp. I've had it. Time to clean up my feed while I contemplate some "editorials" brewing in my soul. I think I'm going to start with muting all who excoriate Biden without mentioning congress. Anyone who advocates not voting will be gone. And nope, I'm not worried about echo-chambers. I don't rely on social media rants for hard facts or much news. I come here to find smart people with good perspectives, and lemma tell ya... whole lot of the current flow is NOT it.

⚕️ Sigh. One step forward, two steps back. Good overview in this short blog:

"The typical non-subsidized health plan for this family would consume over 40 percent of their pre-tax income. Most people would have their mortgage application rejected by a bank if their mortgage payment made up this share of their income. "

Just the first 15min of made me physically sick, listening to so many voices & attitudes from my youth.🤢 😖 PLEASE hear me: if you're not one of those who's spent time in RW fundamentalist circles, you NEED to watch it. More people need better understanding. Yes, it'll make you sick & prob scare you. It should. is as old as Christianity, but this film NAILS our current version--the truth of the culture that brought us to 2016 and beyond.

@MiriShuli Greetings to a fellow escapee... not sure what else to call it. 🤨 I was a couple yrs behind you, but I lived it, too. It's already streaming from Amazon, at least. I purchased & downloaded yesterday. And is is definitely a must-see for anyone who's been lucky enough NOT to do time inside Christian fundamentalism. Not enough ppl understand how this version of minority rule was enacted--very, very deliberately.

Haven't watched "" yet, but will be soon. In truth, I prob don't need to watch it. I was there. I saw firsthand as a young adult. When my slow-maturing brain finally plugged in, when I could no longer tolerate the cognitive dissonance, I left churches forever. Anyone who knows me at all, already knows I've long-since been pounding that drum--that has been pushing the hyper RW agenda for decades before 2016. Film review pending....

One of the things on my mind when I moved to Cochise County, AZ, in 2022 was that I might actually be where my vote had hope of helping a "swing" state--unlike the overwhelming numbers in SC. I'm glad to say I voted for Mayes that fall. Her victory margin was 280 votes.

Mostly I agree, even as a person who lost a daughter at 26wks--long time ago, but could she have been saved this way? I don't know. SHOULD she have been saved if this tech had been available then? It's impossible to answer that from my point of view, but the overarching one? Probably not.

"even if a pregnant patient had a prior written, notarized advance directive stating that they would not want to be kept on organ support if they weren’t likely to ever recover, a doctor could be required under 30 state laws to ignore those wishes and keep her alive.... in 12 of those states, that requirement would be in place even if the pregnancy was not viable."
