"Have some courtesy," someone said in a movie last night.

I was struck by it. Maybe that's why I'm so rough around the edges.

I was never taught courtesy, I recieved no courtesy. I was never taught love as I received no love.

I was only taught cruelty, and because of that, will fight for the opressed, and break that cycle.

Not sure how you can teach yourself courtesy in a world this oppressive and nasty.

peterbrown,
@peterbrown@mastodon.scot avatar

@RustyBertrand I don’t think you can teach it. Animals are courteous one to another, and I think it’s pretty deep-rooted in humans as well. By that I do not mean artificial false local customs, but the innate consideration for the welfare of other human beings.

peterbrown,
@peterbrown@mastodon.scot avatar

@RustyBertrand since we’re talking about courtesy, I don’t think it’s reasonable to take offence at simple disagreement. When it becomes discourteous is when it strays into personal insults or attacks and deliberate confrontation.

I think reasoned arguments is what most of us are here for - agreement is not a prerequisite, but some modicum of decency is and I think that constitutes courtesy.

“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” is still a good yardstick.

You are absolutely right, agreeing to disagree is key .

On April 15, Chicago police aggressively prevented marchers during the worldwide A15 day of action. Organizers say the repression was a message from the city ahead of the upcoming Democratic National Convention in August.

A man in Rafah has described the night of heavy Israeli attacks. Here’s his account:

“Intense bombardment, very very intense bombardment.

“Air strikes, rockets, artillery shelling, tank shelling, drones – all firing at us!

“Never in my life – I am 69-years-old – have I ever seen bombardment like this, and I have witnessed several wars. I have never seen a war like this one."

peterbrown,

@appassionato @palestine not much of a war if only one side is doing the bombing.

Sounds to me more like a massacre.

There are few things which beats a wally close for making a great first impression. This one is in the Hyndland area of Glasgow. For those who don't know, a wally close is the communal entrance to a tenement which is lined with tiles, and often beautifully crafted ones.

peterbrown,
@peterbrown@mastodon.scot avatar

@thisismyglasgow a bit of a pity they put in the glass door. Those tiles seem to carry on up the stairs.

@plink @palestine @israel since their prime motive seems to be to make remaining life in Palestine insufferable, merely seeing carefree children playing will be sufficient trigger to blow them all to kingdom come.

And it’s not a war. For a war, you need two sides that are more or less equally matched, both fighting.
It’s a bombardment ending in a massacre, with genocidal intent.

Cleaned and uncleaned tenements on Albert Avenue in the Queen's Park area of Glasgow. Until a cleaning programme was initiated in the 1970s, most of Glasgow's traditional sandstone buildings were black from many decades of accumulated soot and grime. These tenements show what buildings looked like before and after they were cleaned.

peterbrown,
@peterbrown@mastodon.scot avatar

@thisismyglasgow @brie probably worth mentioning that cleaning operations ceased when it was realised that it was very difficult to clean the stone without damaging it.

Today, I decided to head out of the city and spend the day in the Arrochar Alps. This was the view, including Beinn Narnain (right), the Cobbler (middle), and (I think) the Brack (left), with Loch Goil just making an appearance in the distance. I'll be back to photographing Glasgow tomorrow.

Where are the Stromness Maidens ?

How many Stromness maidens will be up and about early on May 1st to wash their faces in the dew of Brinkie's Brae? We look back to 1946 when there will still a few maidens about and taking part in this traditional event - although even then they were few in numbers. Apparently, Calmac are rationing bookable bike spaces to the Isle of Barra. Of course, what they don’t tell you is that you can turn up and travel with your bicycle. There are only 12 bookable spaces, but 18 came off the boat tonight.
It’s not entirely clear why they’re trying to limit the number of bicycles on the boat. 🤔

This will have serious implications for those planning to complete the as limiting the numbers at the start limits the numbers all the way through to Lewis

In the US, a train carrying gasoline and butane derailed and caught fire

The incident occurred near the border of the US state of Arizona with New Mexico. Six cars containing gasoline and propane caught fire. Local police are investigating the cause of the incident, reports the Associated Press.

The interstate was closed. Residents of houses near the incident were also evacuated as a precaution due to the wind, which carried away thick smoke.

peterbrown,

@rhythmisaprancer @Free_Press difference is that anybody can use the roads, not just one single company.
On maintenance yes, well that’s because successive governments have reduced their tax take and there’s no money left anymore.
