We were talking about Equatorial Guinea at dinner (oil dictatorship, really bad human rights situation), so I said let’s listen to some music from there and see what the people are up to. The first one I landed on was really good.

PSA: How to open a Tesla door in an emergency

I have friends that happily drive their kids around strapped into child seats in Teslas. I ask them a few questions about this, and I've never had a friend of mine who is a parent answer these questions satisfactorily:

  1. Do you know that Tesla doors might not open if there's no power?

  2. Do you know how to manually open the doors?

  3. Have you timed how long it would take you to get your kids out?

Here's how to get out

@mekkaokereke Teslas are poorly made. Flashy and poorly made. It’s been obvious for years.

Your last point was about EV weight generally. I drive a (union-made) Bolt that is 3500 pounds. That’s about 1000 lbs less than a small SUV.

FWIW, I sadly totaled my first Bolt in a flash thunderstorm and I rear ended someone. Everyone was okay. The engine compartment crumpled some and I was totally fine. No fire, nothing leaking.

Okay, friends, any recommendations for audiobooks, podcasts, or other materials to listen to while packing? I'm looking for something that won't require my full attention but will help pass the time. Thanks in advance for any recs!

For-profit private equity prison healthcare is a sin. It's evil. It shouldn't exist. And Massachusetts should not participate in it. It should be run by state employees of the Department of Public Health, accountable to the public. Pass it on.

"[P]rison health care — an industry dominated by two private equity-backed firms — Wellpath and YesCare — both possible bidders for the state prison contract ... Is this really the best Massachusetts can do?"

It's Selma day! As people in places like Boston feel smug about the racism in supposedly backwards, Southern, red places like Alabama, I'd like to remind everyone that:

  • Boston is more segregated than Birmingham, Alabama
  • Police violence data shows more racial disparities in Boston than in Mobile Alabama, or Birmingham, Alabama. Birmingham cops are worse than 55% of all other police departments. AKA, pretty average for the US. Boston is worse than 99%. Exceptionally bad!

🙂🙃

Chart of police violence in Mobile, Alabama, showing that 50% of Mobile is Black but 75% of the people killed by police there are Black, a disparity worse than 55% of all US police departments.
Chart of police violence in Birmingham, Alabama, showing that 70% of Birmingham is Black but only 58% of the people killed by police there are Black, a disparity worse than only 34% of all US police departments.

@mekkaokereke When we say “Boston is racist” we need to not erase the awesome people of color in Boston who are doing great work. Look at the composition of the current city council at the link below. The structural racism in Boston is hellacious particularly in housing and in employment, but there is a path forward and I want to lift up people like City Council President Ruthzee Louijeune who are leading the way out. This can change. https://www.boston.gov/departments/city-council

Your periodic reminder that if you have "streaming fatigue" and are switching to more DVDs, your local public library is the place to go, not Walmart.

Do what I do: place a hold for a DVD using my library's website, they pull it, send me an email when it's ready, and I go pick it up. I'm often in & out in 2-3 minutes.

And wonder of wonders, they will get things for you on interlibrary loan! Obscure things from libraries across your state!

And less plastic waste!

Also, keep in mind that the more you use your public library the better it will be! The higher their circulation statistics are, the more they can justify their budget requests to local government. Help them help you!

Use your public library frequently!

Every single word of this from @gbhnews Without ID you can’t reintegrate: get a bank account, a job, an apartment, insurance. I’ve watched clients struggle with this and it is Kafka-esque. A client who was recently released couldn’t get an RMV appointment for weeks. His whole life was on hold at a crucial juncture. I hope Rep. Fluker-Oakley’s bill to fix this passes. https://www.wgbh.org/news/local/2024-02-22/major-barriers-persist-for-former-prisoners-who-need-ids

Important decision from MA Supreme Judicial Court regarding "black box" algorithm digital forensics. The prosecution tried to use iPhone "frequent location history" evidence against the defendant to prove his presence at the scene. The SJC excluded the evidence as unreliable because the prosecution could not prove the methodology was reliable or testable.

If prosecutors want to use algorithmic evidence against defendants, they should have to disclose source code.

    Thank you.

“Under Massachusetts law, a car cannot idle for more than five minutes … idling for 10 seconds wastes more gas than restarting the engine … You don’t need to “warm up” your car by idling before driving. Even on the very coldest days, the Department of Energy says, most manufacturers advise against idling and recommend only running the vehicle for about 30 seconds beforehand.”

    Rest in Power Shafiqah Hudson.
    https://www.netrootsnation.org/profile/shafiqah-hudson/

Shafiqah, known online as SassyCrass, was a brilliant teacher, writer, and Black feminist that we owe so much to.

We talk a lot about how online disinfo campaigns from Gamergate to the Alt-right to Moscow's Internet Research Agency, target the Black community. But the Black community doesn't fall for it. "Famous security researchers" often pretend that they first found these disinfo networks, but they didn't.

@mekkaokereke An infuriating aspect of this that I have had to deal with is cops coming in to a trial, presenting themselves as experts, and "translating" AAVE for mostly white juries. It would be funny if it weren't so serious, so unreliable, and so racist.

    D_J_Nathanson,
    @D_J_Nathanson@mastodon.social avatar

@mekkaokereke Yup, the "lawyer, dawg" one was extreme and obvious but far from isolated. And even if most people in the courtroom understand the AAVE being spoken, there are studies pointing out real problems with transcribing AAVE if the transcriptionist is not familiar. It can get bad in a very important, way. Lawyers, judges, and court reporters desperately need to develop competency or at least know when to ask for help.

Again, Massachusetts should not be doing business with Wellpath. Prison profiteering and mental health care should not be permitted to coexist.

"Some advocates ... suggested the current structure of the contract incentivizes medical neglect because some of the profits earned by the prison healthcare companies come from the same pool of money used to pay for prison healthcare. This conflict is one of the reasons more oversite is needed, they argue."

I'm seeing a ton of advertising on YouTube for St. Jude Hospital. I'm just going to leave this from @ProPublica right here.

"Only about half of the $7.3 billion St. Jude has received in contributions in the past five fiscal years went to the hospital’s research and caring for patients ... About 30% covered the cost of its fundraising operations, and the remaining 20%, or $1 of every $5 donated, increased its reserve fund."
