The CDC's stance on boosters is contradictory. They acknowledge waning immunity: "protection from the updated vaccine will decline over time." They also state boosters "provide sustained protection against critical illness and death." Yet no pharmacy will give me a booster because the CDC states boosters are only for people 65+ years old or immunocompromised. My PCP wrote me an Rx for a booster but pharmacies won't honor it, deferring to CDC guidelines. Maddening!

Your next infection could make it shorter.
I value the years ahead too much to waste them on one concert or conference.
Most people make different decisions.
I am trying hard to stay healthier and live better than “most people,” I guess.

I spent the day with my uncle today and I'm once again reminded it's ridiculous that he, a gay elder who lived through Reagan and AIDS in Greenwich Village, can't acknowledge the slightest possibility that the government is mishandling for political reasons.
He keeps starting an argument with me about it every time I mention precautions I'm taking, then when I refuse to back down he gets annoyed, says I'm crazy, and says he doesn't want to talk about it.
I love him, but it's a lot.

@jik I’m a gay elder and I see a lot of parallels between the government’s denialism and inaction on AIDS and the current minimization and mishandling of COVID. I never contracted AIDS because I listened to scientists and took sensible precautions. I have not yet caught COVID because I’m following that same self-preservation strategy. Good for you for protecting yourself and those around you! (Including your guncle.) 😉

Looking in vain, so far, for a good rain jacket (for walking/hiking) that doesn't insist that I advertise the company that's selling it.

I really dislike this trend, and it seems to be getting worse.

@dangillmor Agreed. It’s become a challenge with glasses, too. If a company wants me to be a walking billboard displaying their logo, they need to pay me.

Eric Topol OpEd: Opinion: “The U.S. is facing the biggest COVID wave since Omicron. Why are we still playing make-believe?”
I appreciate his concern, but in Sept 2021, he decried people like me for “pervasive pessimism.” Then, amid the Omicron surge, I asked if he regretted that, and he blocked me. Between storing the children's transcripts online -- a veritable honeypot for hackers, and I can't imagine this startup has best-of-breed security -- mixed with the CEO's gormless assertions that this is somehow an alternative to digital warez for kids ...

Fun fact: I've been a software engineer for 23 years but I know my way around a print shop after growing up in one.

From old school light tables, shooting & developing negatives, burning plates, and running offset spot-color presses to more modern desktop publishing tech, process color, and direct-to-printer jobs. I helped my father's business through the digital transformation of that industry.

I use none of of it today but retain a fondness for typography and get twitchy about bad kerning.

@gairdeachas I learned desktop publishing using Adobe PageMaker 1.0 on my 512k Macintosh (the “Fat Mac.”) 🙂

@gairdeachas YES! It was Aldus back then. I also used Aldus Freehand version 1.0.
I was studying at the School of Visual Concepts here in Seattle, though they didn’t teach either program at that time.
