In my latest YouTube video I use the phrase “the people is” several times. This has started quite a discussion in the comments section about whether or not that is grammatically correct. Some people insist it’s always “people are”, while others say that in this case “people is” is the right way. What’s right? Is there a nuance between British and American English here?
@anderspuck
To 90% of native English speakers "The people is" will sound Goofy, even if it's technically grammatically correct in the instance in which it's used.
If you saw #VladVexler's (English I presume is at least his second language, but I think his primary one?) video the other day, he says "The people ARE with me" like 4 times.
There's a similar phenomenon in the whole "gender/pronoun" thing. People who use third person plural pronouns to refer to a single individual (they/them) 1/2
Good morning to readers; Kyiv remains in #Ukraine 's hands.
But Kharkiv remains within the range of #Russian artillery.
And here, amidst a constant low rumble, dozens of children are attending classes in an underground school built in haste for safety at a central metro station.
Maria Pevchikh said the #Russian opposition leader was going to be exchanged for Vadim Krasikov, a Russian hitman who is serving a life sentence for murder in Germany.
Two US citizens currently held in Russia were also going to be part of the deal, Ms Pevchikh claimed.
She added that negotiations were at their final stage on 15 February.
It has now been more than two years since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In this video I give an optimistic and a pessimistic scenario for what will happen in year three. They are very different, and that shows the spectrum of possible outcomes. Nothing is decided yet, and it really could go either way. https://youtu.be/bJK5NYxGNOQ
Did I understand your assessment correctly that both ends of the spectrum are equally likely?
Let's pretend for the sake of argument that the #HouseGOP in the #US gets their collective heads out of their rear ends & approves aid. How much less likely does that make the worst case scenario on the battlefield?
Now what if they don't? How much less likely does that make the best case?
What's the likelihood of either side suffering something catastrophic?
Short 🧵
Yesterday the #NewOrcTimes claimed that 100s of #Ukraine'ian soldiers were captured by #Russia in a retreat from #Avdiivka so chaotic & poorly executed that even #Kremlin#propaganda couldn't keep up (so far behind, RU Mil blogger Murz decided to kill himself!)
My question is, has there been any evidence since yesterday? Beyond statements of "unnamed Western officials" and anonymous interviews with Ukrainian soldiers?
I have no doubt that the retreat was rushed & chaotic, but this would be a huge scandal for #Ukraine and a major PR victory for #Russia if the scale of #POWs alleged here were to be corroborated.
I'm going to be VERY skeptical until there is more proof.
Vlad Vexler says that he does not like reaction videos where the theme is something like “Vlad Vexler destroyes Peter Zeihan", because it's not productive. And then he goes on to absolutely ripping Peter Zeihan apart in this video about #Navalny.
It's worth watching if you want to understand the criticism of Navalny about nationalism, his position on #Ukraine, etc. https://youtu.be/n02DhUQJo90?si=WC-WVGb0tIeXLwqm
@anderspuck
I've never understood why Peter Zeihan is popular. Maybe a year or so ago Vlad made a similar video where he picked apart a bunch of nonsense he said on #JoeRogan's podcast.
Sal Mercoglianos also regularly shreds him for getting basic facts wrong about #shipping & the #JonesAct.
Please keep up the great work you & your team are doing covering the #Russia'n invasion of #Ukraine. The #Journalism you folks are doing is invaluable. Glad I could support.
Now if we can just get the #US#Congress to get off their rear ends & pass the aid package!
I'll also be calling his junior colleague in the #Senate#RogerMarshall to tell him to get his head out of his rear end & support Ukrainians fighting off #Russia's brutal invasion.
@anderspuck
This is why I'm nervous. There seems to be more going on than just a "bad relationship." I'm curious what your take is on this. Great video on Tucker's BS with Putin, btw.
@spv
That account was posting weird racist stuff then using a bunch of unrelated but I assume popular hashtags (including Ukraine & NAFO) in them so they'd show up in the feeds of people who follow those hashtags.
You're the first person I've encountered online in a while who didn't know what NAFO was. 😂
