Ignorance and hubris in one blue package

Quote from the article (http://archive.today/h5ZR8) ‘And she will pledge, like Thatcher, to restore growth by rejecting “managed decline” and delivering the supply side reforms necessary to “equip Britain to compete in a fast-changing world”.’

Tell the UK outside London and the South East all about the ‘managed decline' that was Thatcher's "raison d'être" for the rest of the island. At least Heseltine stood up for Liverpool.

Can't wait for the upcoming local election in Holborn and St Pancras, where I very much hope Starmer loses his seat to Andrew Feinstein (which will ideally lead to a leadership challenge).

Haven't you guys got FPTP, i.e. the same rigged system as we have in the UK? While the Electoral College system may seem more sophisticated it still has the same two-party reinforcing effect.

Shouldn't we have better options?

If there was a genuine safety or security threat from Chinese EV batteries, and not merely Republicans apparently point-scoring with the xenophobic base, then there might be a point to restricting EV consumption from China.

I don't see how the battery technology alone would pose a security threat though (arguably not nearly as great a one as having cheap security cameras all over the place anyway).

Show up late to the game and demand a level playing field much?

Every time i fly i get a chest infection and immune system takes a hit... well, slmost every time, 9 times out of 10 lets say 😅

I haven't flown since we flew to China/HK in 2014. Got sick a couple of days after we arrived. Still wasn't completely recovered-two weeks later when we arrived back in the UK. I hope I can avoid any further flights 🤞

It's engine exhaust fumes/chemicals in the cabin air. Apparently new planes bypass this system, but you don't really have any way of knowing whether the plane will be 2 years old or 20.

I wonder how many letters have gone in so far to the 1922 Committee? Graham Brady, among other Tory 'notables', make some noise about the plot to oust Sunak being 'madness', but I bet at least Mordaunt is secretly celebrating.

She only needs 15% of the parliamentary party to submit letters...

Chances of Sunak surviving a confidence vote, anyone?

Arguing against, personally, it seems to me like chocolate is already responsible for deforestation and people need to fly less frequently if we're intending to stop global heating; I hope very much that Tasmanian Trump loses the upcoming election.

The CEO of Exxon just said "we've waited too long" to tackle climate change. He blames "society" and "activists".

Yes, Exxon. Yes, Exxon. Yes, Exxon: the corporation that for decades has been spending millions to slow progress on climate change, despite its own research showing the problem was urgent.

He said:

"We've waited too long to open the aperture on the solution sets in terms of what we need, as a society, to start reducing emissions.... Frankly, society, and the activist — the dominant voice in this discussion — has tried to exclude the industry that has the most capacity and the highest potential for helping with some of the technologies."

What is this — some sort of dark, twisted joke?

The interview is here:

One has to wonder what the Tories genuinely believed Brexit would bring(?) Clearly they knew it wasn't going to be the great cake-fest they were promising everyone (fishermen, farmers, fans of the NHS), yet did they have any inkling of just how bad it would be?

UK government are making up a registration scheme which will be particularly (I'd love to be wrong) user-friendly for their mates with multiple properties-which they regularly let for small fortunes on Airbnb. DigitalTaoist,

@garbados
F... 'whiteness' - a tired old prejudice that varies greatly depending on who you ask. I was once told by my redneck (would have been) mother in law that my Chilean friend wasn't 'white'. I said he's paler than me - how WHITE is 'white'? She hates me with a passion, and it's reciprocated.

Sticking with the vein of vile fast food restaurants I'd say Long John Silver's and Arby's/Wimpy (though tbh you could include any ff 'restaurant' here, as in Kfc or Subway-with bread so sweet it is officially/legally 'cake') because birds of an imminent heart attack flock together?

P.S. Wimpy - the crappy British version of Micky D's 😂, where the food is ironically even worse than Micky D's.

They tell you before you get one that sighthounds are "really lazy," but I don't think you really grok it till you have one (or more) in the family. Like "they sleep 16-18 hours a day" is a fact that doesn't prepare you for the reality. "They really like blankets" actually means an exponential increase in the numbers of duvets and therefore duvet covers that need washing in the house.

This post brought to you by Ridley once more refusing to get out of bed, and clutching my legs so I can't get out of bed either.
