I’m probably going to be offline and not online too much.
Just sick with the random virus, the lateral flow test says I have been negative for Covid twice. So not trying to tax my energy. Going into powersave mode.

Ahh, I was driving on a curvy road, but I remembered thinking wow, that seems pretty epic, wasn’t near that as far as beautiful, but the sun came through so powerful, it seemed to almost shine through and disperse the clouds :by demand lol it was around, 4pm est maybe 3:50

Diary of an ASD Squirrel. Day 35 Sunday 3/12/23

TL:DR A day of 2 halves, a day where my relationship with my father changed forever.
This is not an easy read - peruse at your own risk.

Up at 4 as usual , chatted with CDP 🧚‍♀️ ,then this old squirrel fell back to sleep - it being Sunday n all

My Dad and sister were due over today so my Dad could complete the ASD assessment Informants questionnaire.
We had some unexpected snow so a quick conflab with the parent & we agreed that the visit should be ok.
Tidying up the house , getting washed / changed took up the morning then headed out early because of the snow.

We met at one of our favourite eateries & had a delicious lunch , I had my first turkey dinner of the season & it was delicious.

The drive back was mildly interesting due to the white fluffy stuff but nothing too serious.

We topped my Dad up with a cuppa & biscuits & presented him with the questionnaire - all 16 pages of it !
I emphasised that it needed to be as thorough as possible because a ASD diagnosis can be difficult without childhood details.

About an hour later he finished .
My sister & my Dad left about 4pm to get home before the snow got heavy again. We said our goodbyes etc & they were gone.

I then read thru the answers my Dad have put down …
17/47 questions had no answers , 7 were ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers to open questions.
Apparently the only thing he remembered of me as a baby was that I didn’t sleep well.
Apparently my only strengths as a person are : IT Work & Computer gaming !

I wasn’t expecting war & peace but the total lack of information in answers that ranged from my birth to the present day, via my pre-teen & teenage years was disappointing to say the least.

I am gonna have to approach other family members to see if they can pad this out!

We’re watching Fargo, for about the 4th time, it’s moderately amusing & involves a lot of snow …. hey there are worst ways to pick a movie!

Mixed nuts & alcohol are helping me cope with being such an important part of my Fathers life that in answer to the question “Can they feel empathy” was blank.

Final Thoughts:

I realise that I have not been a model son, I am no great academic , artist , musician or physician. Shit I can barely hold my own in the IT world. I had thought that my own low opinion of myself was just me , but it appears that my father has an equally low opinion of me, so much so that I barely register.

My diagnosis has suddenly become much less likely, since childhood details are fairly key apparently!

I am Squirrel, because being human is far too fecking hard !

Thanks to all those who are helping me on this journey, in a myriad different ways. I am thankful to each & every one of you ! 🫂 🫶🐿️🖖

We love watching squirrels. One thing I have noticed.

Squirrels (from I what I remember on brains), have this amazing ability to be unrelenting to go after what they need to achieve success.

Cats to Squirrel:
We both fly through the air and land typically gracefully.
You do it by just being you,naturally.
Embody the youness and let it flow, then it’s hard to be anyone else.

Ohh that sounds like fun! Also does anyone do any sensitivity reading?
It seems to be happening in the community as well helping each other to overcome boundaries not previously faced, it seems much more collaborative form of art to me. Just curious!

@actuallyautistic i'm trying to do some research into the basic neurology of neurodiversity and... idk, a combination of not really knowing how to research, not finding more than very biased and very flawed studies (because of course) and just not really knowing what i'm looking for...

i'm just curious whether anyone has any leads or cool resources? most of my knowledge about autism is about behavior and experiences, and as far as i know you can't currently look at someone's brain and be like "ah, yes, there you can see the autism."

i've had this hypothesis i guess that autism and allism aren't as cut and dry as they are sometimes discussed, but the information backing that hypothesis is all experiential, anecdotal, and philosophical. so i'm curious to see some actual data, and i can't find it.

Just fyi, MIT has ocw in neuroscience etc, I would recommend doing the course beforehand…Just because once you realize how things function normally you can kind of see how you specifically are different, keep in mind, no pun intended, there’s many, many, differences between all of us, neurologically.

I would definitely find a neurologist? you can work with you to go over findings at uni, there are sooooo many cognitive biases

, and you should know which journals to trust, sampling sens and specificity. I’ve been reading about it for awhile, also behavior bio ocw, at Standford by Robert sapolsky.

In the end, you may find a better understanding of how you work, but there’s many rabbit holes and cross directional tripwires in this adventure, including many who don’t wish to be pathologized.

I wouldn’t say anyone isn’t smart or not smart, I wouldn’t say that’s as relevant as other things.

It’s a collective of sorts.

Plus if you move around in too many fields you will find words and definitions completely change. It’s not like it’s highly encouraged to those working now. But I can see that happening perhaps?

We are just works in progress of other works in progress.Who are products of other works in progress. > shrugs

I try to be very positive and cheerful about my profession: teaching. It's a fluffing tough job and you have to see the best in it - every lesson, every day, every student. And it can be the most rewarding and important job a person could do. But, my goodness, today was a challenge. When your leaders don't seem to care about their staff and are actively making it more difficult for you, you just get worn down. But. Tomorrow is a new day. Always. @edutooters

I don’t disagree, about safe spaces for us , but if we start excluding people from a certain ideology, construct, minority etc or the many isms then we should also exclude politics and religion as well.

I struggle with spontaneous, two-way personal conversations in person and online with people I don't know well and share strong interests with. I'm more likely to read/watch conversation threads on social media than actively participate unless it touches on something I know well. Often I wait too long processing and feel like I miss my opportunity to contribute. I wish that writing opened up this ability to volley!

Their hair is softer than an angora rabbit. He is extremely intelligent and loving. He’s our resident Houdini/indiana jones.

We wouldn’t have him any other way.

Mochi’s care was crowd funded by the internet community and local people.

Bothersome that I know how to do to much of anything except spot weird solutions to problems, so identity to value ratio.

Only which only some work, more succeed simply because I try and fail, and figure out a solution based off dynamics, much is largely dependent on many factors, the more you learn, are you truly ever an expert?, or have you simply stopped learning? Not to mention, were you born in a country that allows such a connivence?
